Tampa area nursing schools

U.S.A. Florida

:confused:Hello.. My name is Michele. I have been a CNA for around 6 1/2 yrs. I just turned 40yrs. :( Its time to move on and continue in the medical field but not as a nursing assistant. I can do so much better and more as a lpn.. I applied to two schools but did not do well on my entrance exam.. I still plan on continuing and not give up! I just need any information on schools in the bay area.. I'm figuring I would do better in a technical school. The tabe/teas entrance is holding me back but with all the studying I do some school has to accept me! Thank you in advance for any comments or suggestions you may have!:crying2:

For SPC and HCC You dont need to take an entrance exam...at least i dont think.

Ok... Thanks. Most likely you don't need to take an entrance exam but for nursing every school I know requires a test.. Do you live in the Bay area.. And thanks for responding.

I wish I could get answers... I live in Spring Hill but I'm willing to travel to St.Pete

I live in Oldsmar. I know that SPC and HCC and USF dont have entrance exams. Those are the three schools I will be applying to in the fall. I am a freshman now and have taken 17 credit hrs this semester, and next semester 21 credits!!!

And if worse comes to worse...take the TEAS (which I think most schools want) and just see how you do..you may surprise yourself :)

(I hate standarized testing as well!!)

OOO!! I just realized that you are 40 and do not have SAT or ACT scores!! Im sorry. In that case you will have to take some sort of test...

try SPC...I know a lot of kids who didnt do so well on the entrance test but still got it.

Thanks ill probably try that.. If not they probably will make me take courses..

HCC doesn't offer a LPN program. Based on what you stated, www.erwintech.edu or Brewster Tech in Tampa or PTech in St Pete would be your best bet. They all offer LPN programs and the costs don't exceed $4k

At Ewrin Tech, you would have to take the TaBE and score at 12th grade level then take the TEAS and get a cummulative score of 70 or 72%.

At Brewster, TABE at 11th grade, no TEAS but Lottery.

I would suggest that you take the TABe and get a good TEAS study guide and brush up on English, Language and Math (ratios, fractions, percentages, decimals, converting F to Celcius and the Metric System)

Erwin's prgram full time day changed to 14mths and evening is 16 mths.

At HCC, you would have to go for the RN program which is very very competitive. I'm finishing my 2nd semester in the Nursing program. You would have to do all of your prereqs- 21 credits and have at least a 3.2gpa to even be considered.

Good luck

I looked into all those schools.. Everyone of them have almost a two year waiting list! Thanks anyway. I'm looking into kaplan's associate in science nursing. Thanks.

I can assure you that erwin nor brewster have a waiting list. I have 2 friends who have been accepted for the March 2011 erwin class. One took her teas in July of this year. There are private lpn schools but the cost is $18-$19k.

At erwin all that is required is that you have a diploma or ged, take the tabe, score at 12th grade level, regsiter for teas and get a cummulative score of 73% and then you are put into the next available class. I was accepted in 2009 but chose to go to HCC. From what I hear they have a very good LPN program at erwin tech.

Specializes in Home Care.

Here are a few things to be very concerned about when it comes to going to the newer nursing schools.

There is a shortage of spots in the hospitals and other facilities for nursing students. The established schools such as USF, HCC, SPC, Erwin, PTEC and Galen all have prime clinical sites and hours. I can't help but wonder where these new nursing schools are doing their clinical hours...is it all in a sim lab?

You also need to be concerned with the NCLEX pass rate for the school you are considering attending. How many people graduate a program is not as important as the number of people who pass the board exam on the first try.

Given the current economic situation in Tampa Bay and the forecast that things won't change here for at least 3 more years, I wouldn't rush into nursing. There are few jobs for new LPNs and new RNs.

Dont' rush it.

Nobody is rushing... There are waiting list out there..

If you go online erwin and brewster have I think the longest. Where they do there clinical I have know idea. They been around for awhile so I don't think it's that bad.
