I am very excited to apply for TCC's Spring 2014 cohort! I have a 3.7 GPA and 90.5 HESI score, totaling 143.5 points. I also completed microbiology and humanities.
I feel good about my score, based on previous posters having 138 points and ultimately getting in. We have put down our $1k deposit on day care and have arranged our lives for a January start date.
Good luck to everyone, we have all worked very hard to get to this point!
I called the book store just a min ago,
This is aparently a box of books required for class. At the moment the bookstore is waiting on the department to figure out what they want so they can order it. So they, the book store, doesnt even know whats inside or what to order yet. Lets keep checking in. If this is like a lab materials kit we will be stuck buying it from them. If it is just a box of books it can be outsourced from another vender. the key will be getting the ISBN numbers of the books inside so they can be ordered individually. The book store should be able to tell us this once the book list has been provided. I confirmed the books already posted are still required.
As a side note they still don't know the book for concepts yet.
this is all concerning given there is only a month till class starts.

Hi, I'm a current student in the program. The Concepts book is Smeltzer. When they say "box", they probably mean a bundle that includes the Smeltzer text, study guide, lab values manual, and a mini text. You will use this text all semesters except for 2nd, when you have Peds/Maternity and Mental health. Hope that helps. : )
Sean, When I bought my books off Amazon there was only about a $30 total price difference between buying new and used. That was for all the books posted up to that point.
I keeo calling the book store to get the info for the books in the Smeltzer box. If and when I get the ISBN numbers I will post them here.
Woops, I meant to quote laylal337's comment from page 6 on this thread for my question. The books that are required doesn't have anything on them about Taylors and Brunners, so I was just wondering what they were.
But as far as the Smeltzer box, I called the bookstore yesterday and got some info. They said all the books that are included in the package are brand new editions. She also said she couldn't open them to get individual ISBN's (I cant see how that can be true, but I who knows). So basically she said we have to buy it from there.
If you want to save money, dont even bother buying new, or if you can, buy previous editions. There is no work to be done out of the book, its strictly for reading. You dont need the Smeltzer bundle either, you really wont ever touch anything besides the main textbook. Textbooks in this course...is really a waste of money.
Hey everyone,
I am currently entering the fourth semester at TCC! Congratulations to everyone who was accepted. I would like to share some words of wisdom with you...
1. Buy:[h=1]HESI Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination[/h]2. Invest in a good bank of NCLEX style questions such as The Point, or even ones from LLW. The use them, on the regular. Especially if you can get ones that are by system, then use them to study and learn the rationals.
3. The first semester is the hardest (NC1 is terrible). But do not get complacent because you can still fail after the first semester, someone has failed at least once a NC.
4. You will no longer get strait A's, just let it go because it is not worth your sanity I promise you. C=RN
5. No one will die at the retirement home if you don't get a blood pressure. Enjoy talking to the residents and don't sweat the small stuff.
6. DO NOT let your BLS, PPD, or flu shot (the date the school says) expire. They will catch it, and you will be kicked out. They are as serious as a heart attack about that stuff.
7. Do NOT be late to clinical, and if you are.. CALL. 2 no-call-no-shows=kicked out, and it carries through the whole program.
8. Do not fear Hayes, just know your stuff when you talk to her, don't BS her and do not argue with her.
9. Make up clinicals suck! Try and avoid at all costs.
10. Do not study only pathophysiology in Nursing Concepts, know the nursing action and what the nurse is expected to know. For example, if you have a patient with a TURP (look it up) the most important nursing intervention is not to give meds. It will be to irrigate the bladder continuously. Learn the testing style before you go into class and you'll do so much better (see #2).
Best of luck to everyone, and you can message me if you have questions!!

I was just remembering what SaraEC said about them upgrading the edition a few posts back, and not having the information all together yet. My friend who is graduating this semester showed me her book from Concepts, and it was at least 5 inches thick. She said that it was used quite a bit and it would be strange if we didn't need one. You could definitely be right though. I haven't contacted any of the staff about this.
