I am very excited to apply for TCC's Spring 2014 cohort! I have a 3.7 GPA and 90.5 HESI score, totaling 143.5 points. I also completed microbiology and humanities.
I feel good about my score, based on previous posters having 138 points and ultimately getting in. We have put down our $1k deposit on day care and have arranged our lives for a January start date.
Good luck to everyone, we have all worked very hard to get to this point!
hayley1220, for the example you gave us, "For example, if you have a patient with a TURP (look it up) the most important nursing intervention is not to give meds. It will be to irrigate the bladder continuously." How would that question be presented to us? Would it be a short answer or a multiple choice type of question, or other?
Sean here is an example:
[h=3]A patient undergoing a TURP returns from surgery with a three-way urinary catheter with continuous bladder irrigation in place. The nurse observes that the urine output has decreased and the urine is clear red with multiple clots. The patient is complaining of painful bladder spasms. The most appropriate action by the nurse is to
a. administer the ordered IV morphine sulfate, 4 mg.
b. increase the flow rate of the continuous bladder irrigation.
c. give the ordered the belladonna and opium suppository.
d. manually instill 50 ml of saline and try to remove the clots.[/h]
This is why only reading your textbook isnt good enough and you need an NCLEX study book. The text will only describe what TURP is, not what your interventions are as a nurse.
I really suggest getting this book (Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment: Practice Exercises for the NCLEX Examination, 2e: Linda LaCharity, Candice K. Kumagai, Barbara Bartz: 9780323065702: Amazon.com: Books) because it will help you out on these questions.
Yes you are correct. The same people who make the HESI make the NCLEX, so studying for either one of those is the same. I suggest getting this one (Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN® Examination, 6e (Saunders Comprehensive Review for Nclex-Rn): Linda Anne Silvestri PhD RN: 9781455727551: Amazon.com: Books) for an NCLEX book. This will really help you out in Fundamentals, so study those chapters with the material you are assigned. I really wished I had this book during Funds because I was reading it over and saw a bunch of questions on there that were in the final for that class. This one and the delegation book I linked to before are really good supplementary materials to have for your first semester.
Sean,
Every test in nursing school with the exception of like one (in mental health) are multiple choice in the computer lab. Most tests are 50 questions and you cannot go back once you submit an answer. Some quizzes are short answer or fill in the blank such as drug math quizzes. As for writing assignments, most are really just completion grades to boost your overall grade so take advantage of that. The other thing ya'll should know is that the in-class quizzes can make or break you. I know multiple people who's quiz grade sunk them. Make sure you watch out for those!!
About the program itself, most classes you take are challenging and you may not like every professor. However, do not listen to everyone when they tell you horror stories about people. Just know the information you are responsible for and do not argue with a teacher no matter how you see the situation (go talk to them one on one if you must). There are a lot of great teachers at TCC and if they know you want to learn and be better, they will help you. Remember these ladies have worked in the community and know a lot of influential people so they can be a great asset to you.
Don't loose sight that this program is to prepare you to become a nurse. The care plans, stress, "U"s, and tests all have a purpose. You are really only hurting yourself by not trying to absorb as much as you can while your in. That includes clinicals. Do not be afraid to take the difficult patient or preform a procedure. Before you know it, you will have to perform that skill and someone won't be there to walk you through it.
Hey guys, I went by the bookstore today to try and find some information about these Smeltzer boxes, these magical boxes that cannot be opened. I wasn't able to find out much, but I was able to find out that these two texts are inside:
Medical-Surgical Nursing, 12e, SmeltzerSpark's and Taylor's Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual, 9e
If anyone knows more, please post!

The instructor you guys will be getting for Fundamentals is...very egotistical to say the least. I suggest you guys not work very hard on the article you will be assigned because she gave everybody a 80 (which is a C in nursing school). Also if you see that you have her in clinicals, TRY to get out of them ASAP. She gave 20 U's for one clinical rotation and flunked out a few students.
