Wow. Interesting to read. We don't have a morgue, our coroners office or funeral home comes to get all deceased.

In the hospice in-patient facility I volunteer at we keep the body until the funeral home picks it up. The body is cleaned, dressed, and left in bed draped with a quilt for any family/friends who want to say goodbye until such time as the funeral home driver arrives. They usually arrive with in a couple hours of death. I assume if for some reason arrangements hadn't been made or the funeral home was running really late that the body would be transferred to the hospital's morgue for holding. As a volunteer one of my responsibilities is to walk out with the funeral home provider, family, and body to the vehicle - partly to support the family, and partly to make sure the quilt used to cover the body bag is retrieved and processed for cleaning.

I don't think I'd mind taking a body to the morgue if that was part of my job; hospice has helped me be much more comfortable around death.

We take ours to the morgue if the funeral home is not coming within an hour or so.We have had troops of extended family walk with us.We have also had a few family members demand to be taken to the morgue to see their loved one hours after their death..I think these people just don't understand, the funeral home will allow a visit before cremation but sometimes these folks just come unhinged.Nothing worse then picking a visitor up off the floor in the morgue....
