Taking a Long Leave of Absence from Work

Updated:   Published

Has anyone taken an extended leave of absence?

Has anyone ever taken an extended leave of absence from work? Lately, I've been contemplating taking a 4 week leave of absence from work.

I did go back for 3 weeks after COVID, but I'm not sure I did myself any favors.  Any time I overexert myself, my bronchitis and angry pleural sac flare up. This last week, I worked 3 6 hour days, 2 12 hour days, did PT 2x, yoga on Saturday and Pure Barre on Sunday. Today, I spent an extensive amount of time sleeping. I also noticed that I've lost another 3 lbs, making for a 13 lb weight loss in 1 month, when I never needed to lose weight to begin with. It just seems like I'm not going to get any better until I slow down. I feel like 4 weeks with no work would give me time to exercise while resting when I want.

Has anyone else ever taken a long leave from work and has it helped?

Best of luck to you.
Covid is a horrible disease. It's rage-inducing to see other healthcare "professionals" lying about their religious beliefs in order to avoid getting vaccinated.

I would agree.  I also find it infuriating to see people just blatently disregard safety precautions.   We had a nurse on my unit yesterday enter a COVID room without any PPE on, not even a mask.  All I can say is that he better hope his stupidly doesn't get him infected

Thanks! I forgot about that section of the website

I also did ask about switching units and/or reassigning the COVID patients to a different manager.  The DON didn't seem to receptive of the idea.  She didn't seem to offer any suggestions.  The only thing she really said was that because I had COVID, I'm less likely than some of the others to get it again.   Maybe there's some truth to that, but I'm not buying it.  I just think that, for whatever reasons, she doesn't want to rearrange assignments.  This is frustrating though, because I no longer trust vaccines, PPE or built-up immunity.  In my opinion, the stronger, healthier manager should get the COVID patients but I guess she doesn't agree.

Any suggestions for making my case against working with any COVID patients for awhile?

I did tell the DON that I wanted to switch units due to health reasons, but I'm not sure she was convinced.  For some reason, she doesn't want to give the other manager the COVID patients.   Wouldn't it make sense to have a stronger manager overseeing the COVID unit? But alas, we don't always do what makes sense at my workplace

I personally call BS that I've developed immunity from COVID.  They just want to cater to the other manager for some reason

Resenting patients because they get the Plaxovid you did not just speak volumes.  You need help. We all have to with inherent risks in this world and you can't just make the boss do what you want. You ALWAYS have excuses for everything. Reasons why/reasons why not. You ask for help, but can never manage to actually do what you really need to do.  I hate to say it, but I would not want to be your patient or your coworker at this point.

I hope you get the help you clearly need.

Perhaps the other manager has a health concern that you're not aware of? It's a possibility

That could be.  Hadn't really thought of that.

What you're saying makes sense.  I'm not sure why I became so obsessed with the paxlovid.  I knew early on that I couldn't have it because of the potential for strong interactions with a medication I've been taking for 15 years (so obviously discontinuing that med wasn't an option).  If I had taken the Paxlovid, I could have ended up in a coma.   The fact that I'm back to work full time after a month probably means I didn't really need it.

Also, as a nurse, I should know that not all medications are right for everyone.   That wasn't the right medication for me. Doesn't mean, though, that someone who could benefit from it shouldn't get it.  Also, not everyone else who has wanted it received it, either.  There were patients who were also turned down due to medication side effects.

Additionally, maybe my supervisor perceives me as asking for too many accommodations. I've noticed it irritates her when I ask for the same flexibility my colleague has.  It's possible she feels I'm trying to dump too many things on someone else, or at the very least, am trying to avoid things I don't care for.   Maybe she feels I'm asking for help with things that I'm perfectly capable of doing myself, or maybe I'm asking for help without offering it in return.  There could be a variety of reasons why she doesn't want to accommodate my request.

I can understand not wanting to be a patient or coworker of mine.  I can be difficult to work with, given that I seem to need a lot of support but don't seem able to give it.

Is it unreasonable to find a different position if my current one won't accommodate my request for limited COVID exposure/unfair assignment of COVID patients?

I've noticed no response to my request for 3 weeks off.  I think I've probably done something to irritate them
