My name is Taylor and I am a MSN-FNP student at Simmons University. My co-investigators and I are conducting an online survey to examine the association between the COVID-19 pandemic and new graduate nurse burnout and professional satisfaction. Your participation in this study will help contribute to this research and lead to lasting improvements in the nursing field.

Recent reports indicate that up to 48% of novice RNs leave their position within the first year of practice. The transition period, which includes the first six to twelve months of practice, is considered to be the most sensitive and vulnerable time for new graduate nurses to commit to or leave the profession.

The most frequently reported factors affecting the successful transition of new graduate nurses during their first year of nursing were physical and psychological stress. While prior studies document the psychological impact of COVID-19 on experienced nurses, this current study aims to evaluate the transition to the nursing role as well as factors which have led to burnout among new graduate nurses during the pandemic. The goal of the present study is to gain insight into the experiences of new graduate nurses, and evaluate the impact of  COVID-19 on job satisfaction and burnout, in order to make recommendations to healthcare organizations on how to prepare and mitigate factors contributing to novice nurse burnout, and subsequently turnover, especially during times of greater stress on the healthcare system.

We are looking for responses from new graduate nurses holding a BSN degree (or equivalent), have worked less than two years, work in the US, and have worked at any point during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The online survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Responses will be completely anonymous and participation is voluntary. If you decide to participate in this research survey, you may withdraw at any time. There are no consequences of any kind if you decide that you do not wish to participate.
