SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University ABSN 2021-2022

Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2021. Being that the application period just opened, I’m sure we can all benefit from sharing information in regards to the process.

Best of luck to those applying!

So curious as to how many applicants they got! I am so nervous they won't even consider my application because I am doing 2 science classes in the Spring, but the admissions counselor told me they still can.

Specializes in Microbiology Technologist.

I think someone said around 300 people apply!! Oh I did not know you can still take some science courses. I thought they all had to be complete before you apply. Are these for the prereqs?

I really hope we hear back soon as well. My application status has been the same for a while now.

does anyone know how much they take employment/undergraduate degree into consideration? I have a 4.0 in prerequisites and scored 99th percentile on the TEAS (97.9 science, 97.9 reading, 94 math) but don't have anything related to healthcare in my work history and my undergrad was an arts BFA. My status has been the same for months and I haven't heard anything from them...

No, you can still have some left when I spoke to admissions it just needs to be complete by the time the program starts. It says on the application also conditional situations are reviewed case by case, so for me my school does not even offer Microbiology in the fall and only the Spring, so I didn't have a choice here. I think they will start to look at the applications after the holidays.

It is a very holistic approach, I am a firm believer that if you have a great personal statement, recommendations, and some experience and good grades you should be more than fine!

When I went to an info session, I don’t think they gave an exact amount for how much employment is taken into consideration. They just emphasized that they take a very holistic approach. I don’t think you have to worry about your degree either because people decide to change careers from all sorts of backgrounds.  You sound like a very strong candidate so!!

Do they accept science classes done on portage learning?

Has anyone taken pre reqs through portage learning?

I think I remember them saying that they did in their info session, but I'm not a 100% sure; I would email them.

The TEAS could be taken with ATI remotely or do they want the PSI version, because on their website it says with PSI and I can't remember what they said on the webinar

Hi! As far as I know it’s the same thing, one is just offered remotely. I took it at a PSI center and it was fine!

I emailed them in September and they said because of the pandemic, you can take it remotely if you please. Both remote and PSI are accepted. It’s just up to you on how you want to go about it
