SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University ABSN 2021-2022

Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2021. Being that the application period just opened, I’m sure we can all benefit from sharing information in regards to the process.

Best of luck to those applying!

Wow, that was super helpful, thank you for your thorough breakdown of the program! I just had one question about the last point though: I actually asked downstate admissions about whether they would accept credits for Patho from Portage Learning and they said no, that no credits for Patho were accepted because it’s part of the curriculum. The program website directly contradicts this statement and says credits for Patho are acceptable pending a credit evaluation. Did anyone in your cohort take Patho prior to starting the program? Thanks!

That's up to the discretion of the ABSN director. I took pharm and patho and did not get them "transferred" over b/c I asked for the transfer after I was already taking the courses. This step needs to happen prior to starting classes. But my advice is to take these 2 courses as many times as you can... repetition is key for pharm.

PS: Contradiction and disorganization is normal for Downstate... but as long as you refer to proper guidelines when asking (like a fact-checker)... you should be OK... just keep reminding yourself most students end up with 100K+ in debt... you won't be anywhere near that number.

Thanks so much for the reply! I'm likely going to bite the bullet and just take Patho through Portage Learning - another program I applied to requires Patho completed prior to starting the program. And yes, that SUNY tuition is irresistible for sure LOL

Thank you so much for these details!! It is so helpful. Do you mind saying what your schedule is like? I work and have a toodler and I really want to do this accelerated program

See step 2. Our program of study will be very different from yours b/c we started in the Summer (super accelerated) and you're starting in the Fall... so it's hard to say - but one thing to note is that they stack lectures all in one day to be mindful of things like this, and then depending on the semester you'll have full day clinic rotations 1-2x a week... so at most it's 2-3 full work weekdays... then you need every free day to do homework, and study, and to be glued to your computer... to all the moms and dads out there... you amaze me.

Hey guys, was wondering if you applied with pre reqs in progress and if so how many and which ones they are? I currently have 2 science classes I will finish in May and a sociology course, so I am nervous they won't look at my application even if everything else I have is good.

I have a math prereq that I’m taking in the Spring but I finished everything else. You can always ask the admissions office and they’ll let you know. They usually respond very fast.

Do you guys know around how many people they ask to interview and how many get accepted into the program?

What were everyones scores on the TEAS? Is is very holistic the approach because I got an 80 on the TEAS, but my overall GPA is a 3.8.

Has anyone submitted their application before taking the TEAS? Its not letting me submit without the scores.

you can't submit it until the scores are in

Hi allnurse123!

I have also applied for the 2021 ABSN program.

I was wondering if you can tell me what the weekly schedule will be like? I hope to be able to work during the program - how many full days of school would you say you have every week? I know you sort of answered this question a bit but was hoping you could go into a bit more detail..

Also, what would you say you paid each term for tuition and all other fees (not including housing, I plan to stay at my apartment.) I really want to do this program if I get accepted but I am concerned about paying for it and managing work/school balance. How much would you say you should have saved up before the program start? I'm only eligible for 10k in government loans at this point so it is something I really have to plan.

Thank you for all your help!

Sorry, that last post was meant for ABSN21_Downstate

Hey, so to be honest you probably won't have time for a job in my opinion. It is an accelerated program done in such a short time so your entire time is this school. I have a bunch of friends in accelerated nursing programs and they are constantly doing work or studying

Yeah, from what I’ve heard it’s extremely difficult to balance school and a job at least for the first semester. I attended the virtual open house and a former student said you have more time to work as the program progresses though!
