SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University ABSN 2021-2022

Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2021. Being that the application period just opened, I’m sure we can all benefit from sharing information in regards to the process.

Best of luck to those applying!

I wasn't called but I was emailed today for an interview this week. I applied in September, I didn't have amazing grades at all, but I did have good TEAS scores and 1.5 years of experience in the medical field. I was honestly surprised when they contacted me for an interview.

For those who've completed their interview, was there any essay question  I know pre-COVID they used to give out essay and math questions. Has this changed since its through virtual interviews now?

Good luck to everyone!

Hey congrats on your interview! I really hope you get in! On the interview, there wasnt an essay question. They just asked four or five questions per person. Just remember to be yourself and show them why you would be a great nurse. Good luck!

Hey my overall GPA when applying was 3.43 (SBU Health Science Major). My prereq GPA was a 3.62 (science GPA 3.5). My ATI TEAS score was an overall 90% , reading score of 89.4%, Math 96.9%, Science 89.4%. English 79.2%. I’ve only ever volunteered during high school for a Summer in a nursing home,  few months on a political campaign and in my church and at a homeless feeding program. Honestly I didn’t have crazy medical experience like a lot of people however my extracurricular activity at SBU and my personal essay were what I feel like what made me a strong candidate. I have a decent amount of leadership experience on campus (including president of a club). Also show that you are passionate about something and relate it to nursing if you get an interview. A lot of people think medical experience is the golden ticket in, but I feel like they want well rounded individuals who have a drive for something. Be yourself, and tell them why you want it, be genuine. Tell stories that show examples and demonstrate those qualities. Most importantly breathe! I hope this helped.

also I applied end of January and it said under review for a very long time and then said screening complete in early March. I got a call for the interview a day before it happened (so be prepared!) and good luck!

Did you get the call the day your status changed to screening complete?

For those who heard back, how long did it take to go from under program review to an actual verdict? My status just changed on Sunday

No I got it a few weeks after that

Hey everyone, id really appreciate it if someone can help me out! is it possible or has anyone got into the program with B's in all science classes? Like anatomy&phsyiology 1 and 2, micro, and chem. Like every other class in my pre reqs is A's and A-'s except those 4 classes which I know are the most important!

Hey,

I received a B in Anatomy 2 and B+ in med micro. I believe there are people with lower grades in those classes who got in. Best of luck to you!

I believe they don’t only care about grades. I got a B in every science prerequisite but Chemistry.

It seems like they care mostly about experience in the medical field/volunteering. I wonder if someone without these will even be considered for admission

For those who took the TEAS at a testing center how long did it take to get your scores and update on the application checklist?

Anyones application also say screening complete? Been like that since Tuesday and its been quiet for me
