SUNY Downstate ABSN 2019-2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I wanted to start a thread about the upcoming application process for SUNY Downstate ABSN. There is a fantastic thread for the previous round of applications last year, and I thought this would be a good forum for us to share any information that we might have about Downstate's admission process as we go through it together. Good luck everyone!!!

Hello! I'm from the previous round and I'm currently in the program. We have a open house 10/16 from 4-7pm, feel free to stop by. The current students and I will be speaking about our experience so far in the program.

Hi there! My name is Nick. I will definitely see you at the open house on 10/16. I'm happy to hear that you and other students will be there to speak about the program. Downstate is my number one choice and I am so excited to hear more about the school and the process. I submitted at the beginning of September and based on the thread from your cohort last year, I am hoping to be a strong candidate for the 2019-2020 cohort.

Hi Michelle! I'm also applying to the ABSN program for next summer. Based on your experience, how do you like the programs so far? I've heard that a lot of accelerated nursing programs are disorganized. Where do you guys do your clinicals? Thanks for your help!

I really like it because I was also accepted into NYU and LIU, you really get the bang for your buck. It is somewhat disorganized but works itself out eventually. This summer was really tough taking 5 classes all at once along with a clinical . We have a good selection of hospitals for clinicals, we use a sign up app and pick ourselves so it's first come first serve when the link is emailed.

@michelle.singh60 After reading about some of the other programs that I've applied to, I see a lot of comments about the students in accelerated nursing programs having to learn everything on their own. They often say that professors aren't as available, or willing to help students that are struggling. Do you find that to be the case at Downstate? Are there resources available for help if needed?

I'm worried that my GPA won't be high enough but I do have a good TEAS score and good extracurriculars, do you know if admissions is very competitive in terms of GPA or do they consider your application holistically?

Help is there if you go and get it! I did have a professor who wasn't as available but the other professors always are open to talking. You won't struggle if study and try your best. The lack of effort is what causes 90% of the struggle. Our program director Dr. Carr is literally amazing and she revamped the program for my year and onward.

Its holistic! Experience in the health field is integral as well. TEAS math and English should be at least 85% to be competitive. For gpa I had a 3.9 and I've had classmates with less than 3.5, it's all about what you bring and personal essays are mainly what determines if you get an interview. Make sure you get good letters of rec as well.

@michelle.singh60 As you know I plan on attending the open house, and I already attended the application advisement session just before I submitted my application. Did you do anything aside from the interest meetings to help you stand out? Do you have any recommendations? I feel good about my stats and application, but I am wondering if there is anything else I could do to keep that application fresh in their minds in admissions, especially considering I applied at the beginning of September and there is a long way to go before interviews/decisions.

P.S. I appreciate your insights!

First come first serve basis! Good on you for submitting earlier, you should be one of the first to hear back on interviews if they decide to interview you. The waiting is the tough part because they take forever to update the application status.
