Summer III At Mayo Clinic? (And Other Externships)

Published

Hi everyone...

I know that something like this question has been posted before, but there weren't too many responses, so I thought I'd try again and see what I got...

Basically, I'm just wondering if anyone had any experience with the Summer III nurse externship program at Mayo Clinic? I'm wondering how beneficial you felt it to be, the quality of support/learning opportunities provided by nurses, costs of housing, and other pros/cons. Also, I'm curious as to how competitive the program is...I have a 3.73 GPA, was a CNA at an LTC facility back home this past summer, and attend a well known nursing school. Does this sound promising, or will I just be "one of the crowd" with only a mediocre chance of getting in?

Other externship locations I'm looking at are at UPMC and Allegheny General (in Pittsburgh...as my nursing school is very near these). Does anyone have any thoughts about these?

And, the last thing, I promise :lol2:...since I'm pretty much free to go wherever (as long as housing costs/etc. aren't absolutely astronomical), does anyone know of any externships that were so amazing that they want to suggest them to me?

Thank you in advance for your help, and sorry if anyone feels like they've been absolutely peppered by questions!

Hi there! I did the Summer III program at Mayo Clinic and absolutely loved it! It was a wonderful opportunity to work side by side with a nurse for 10 weeks. I really felt that it gave me a lot of confidence going into my last year of nursing school. They treated the Summer III's very well (sightseeing trips and banquets) and I have nothing but positive things to say about it. When I did it, almost three years ago, we were housed in some apartments of a local community college and I honestly cannot remember how much it cost, but you should be able to find that information on the website.

I would recommend that you apply!! Your GPA sounds good and you'll never know if you don't apply! I still keep in touch with my roomates and out of the four of us I'm the only one that doesn't work at Mayo. I would love to, but I'm a Southern girl and it's a long way from home. I think it's a wonderful program and you will never regret it if you do it! I hope this helps and good luck to you in whatever you decide.

Absolutely apply for the Mayo externship. My daughter went there last year and she had a wonderful experience.

Best of luck!

I loved the experience; I went 4-5 years ago and learned so much. It's a wonderful environment to be in- everyone wants to teach, and you see a lot that you will never or rarely see anywhere else. The history of the Mayo Clinic makes it just cool to be there (at least for dorks like me, haha). The program itself is structured really well too. I got very close to some of the other students there; still keep in pretty good touch with a few of them. And more than that it made me excited again about being a nurse, after some clinicals and classes I hadn't been sure of; made me realize what being a nurse COULD be like. I know this sounds silly and probably part of it is the rose-colored glasses of reminiscing, so take it with a grain of salt; but I think you should go for it.

Mayo Clinic sounds awesome! I did an externship at UCLA the summer before graduating and absolutely loved it. Nothing beats a summer in sunny California, IMO! PM me if you'd like more info....best of luck to you!

Hiee,

i am thinking about doin a nurse externship

at UCLA next summer. can you give me the details

on ur experience there? do u know what they look

for? like GPA? I also live in VA so idk how hard it is

for me to get it >

I did an externship at a local teaching hospital and absolutely LOVED the experience. It was a ten-week deal, very akin to the Mayo Clinic program. I think it honed my skills and time management much more than clinicals ever did...because I was the only student on that floor and everyone knew I was there to experience as much as possible. Definitely apply to the Mayo program. I've heard wonderful things about it. Good luck!:-)

Hello,

I am applying to the Summer III nursing program at the Mayo clinic too. I am from Boston, MA. Are you more likely to get accepted if you are from MN? Or, is there no preference for in or out of state students?

I also have a 3.4 GPA. And, I work as a PCA for a woman at home. Do you think I have a good chance of getting in? I know someone mentioned a 3.7...good for you!!!! Also, do we only need one reference from clinical faculty?

Any advice that anyone could provide would be so helpful. This really sounds like an AMAZING opportunity and I am soooo worried that my GPA is too low.

Thanks!!!

Hello everyone!

I did the Mayo Clinic summer iii program last summer and absolutely loved it! they treat you well, decent pay, set you up with an apartment near by, etc. I worked on an ENT/Plastics floor, but there is so much more offered there. It was by far the best experience and job I have had and I would go ahead and apply! They look for diversity for where students come from. I am from Vermont and Maine, so not being from MN doesnt make a difference in what they are looking for in applications

Mike

I agree with mursethorn. Mayo Clinic looks for diversity on where the applicants come from. I'm from Hawaii and of Asian descent and got accepted last summer. It was a great experience. I gained friends and nursing colleagues from all over the country.

Can anyone who ahs gone there before tell me whether its better to fly or take your car? wahts easier to get around with?? car or rochester city transportation?
