Summer Entry 2012 Accelerated BSN Johns Hopkins

Published

Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. :yeah: So here's to the 2012 application cycle!

I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.

If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words?

So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?

Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?

As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.

p.s. You are awesome for reading my novel. There have been many a times where I skipped over long posts. :coollook:

I can't wait till orientation to meet you all. Congrads to all who got in and I will cross my fingers for those still waiting a reply.

I got a call at 3:45 eastern time! I'm in summer entry ABSN/MSN adult nurse practitioner! Congrats to everyone else who has heard and good luck to everyone still waiting...it's not yet the 15th, so don't get too anxious! I can't wait to meet everyone!

Are any of the BSN/MSN accepted students deciding between Hopkins and other schools? Or are there any former students who can shed some light on Hopkins? I feel like I have heard so many good things about Hopkins, but to make sure I have an unbiased opinion, I want to know if there's anything bad.

Also, does anyone know how selective JHU is with the public health rotations that you can do abroad? I really want to do one!!

FNPHopeful - The one thing I've heard about JHU is they do have more options for abroad than other places but that is just what I've read. If you look on their site, you can see blogs of current students and some of their abroad rotations. I'd really like to go abroad as well.

I'm biased because JHU is my first choice, so much that I'm only applying to it for the 2012 year. If I don't get in, I'll apply to other schools and JHU again.

Hey guys I graduated from the ABSN program at Hopkins. If you guys have any questions feel free to post them, I'll do my best to answer them for you (from a previous student's perspective).

FNPHopeful: For Public Health, there are a few choices to go abroad, I think most people from my class who wanted to go abroad for public health were able to. It's a pretty short trip, about 10 days, and there's a lot of prep for it leading up to the trip. Two of my really good friends went to St. Croix and they loved it and learned a lot.

Anyways, if you have any really specific / individual questions fee free to PM me also.

Hey Aggie! Do you have any advice on housing or specific streets and areas to look at? Also, do you have any advice on classes or professors or anything?Honestly I'd just love to hear anything and everything you have to tell!! :)

Hey Aggie,

I was just wondering how intense the accelerate program is? Any advice on how to thrive with the fast past of the program. I am wondering how it would be to balance family and school life. Thank you for giving us insight.

If you could, I'd suggest attending one of the open houses. We went this past weekend and the students said they felt like their brains were fried the first semester. Classes are 8am to 5pm M-F. I was originally planning on commuting but after attending the open house and discussing with my husband, we will be moving to Baltimore. It is even a bigger change than expected because we'll need to move out, find a place that will take two medium size dogs and then rent out our current place.

I was able to talk with the head of admissions and she was really insightful. I was able to also speak with a student who was in a similar situation as myself in that she changed careers in her 30s.

I really, really want to get into JHU. I hope they accept me.

Thanks Leenak, I am in the same situation with changing careers in my 30's and in a LTR of 12yrs. I am planning on moving to Balitmore from Buffalo and am pretty excited but also kind of nervous. When does regular admissions find out the status of their application? I wish you the best of luck.

My application should be complete this week and I think we find out in March or April.

Huge props for making that decision! I'm so focused on how I'm just going to make the big move by myself - I can't imagine moving with a significant other and pets. Huge commitment for sure. I wish you all the best with it if and when you move :)

Thanks! My biggest concern is finding a place but as I have a car (although I might get rid of it), I can be a bit more flexible in where I live. I'm hoping to live within the Baltimore city limits but money and availability will be the biggest deciding factor. Since we only live an hour away, it won't be a huge move but big enough. I hope I find out by early April so I can start figuring out the details. I've also been scouring Craigslist but most of the rentals are looking for immediate moves, none as far out as 6 months.
