Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. So here's to the 2012 application cycle!
I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.
If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words?
So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?
Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?
As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.
p.s. You are awesome for reading my novel. There have been many a times where I skipped over long posts.
Things I have done while waiting to hear ED decisions:
-baked. by the time they call I will have gained a million pounds.
-studied for finals.
-hung christmas lights everywhere, so that my house looks like santa clause's factory blew up, and my roommate is concerned.
-hung christmas lights everywhere all over the clinic I work at, so that all the doctors are concerned.
-made the biggest pan of lasagna ever and distributed it around.
-introduced all my doctors at work to Justin Bieber's christmas album.
-in general, drove everyone, including myself, insane.
the 15th cannot. come. soon. enough!!!!
bahahahaha I love it. Justin Bieber you say?
What I've been doing is figuring out how the news will come. I think only those accepted may get a call and if they can't reach you on your phone then you get an email. Those rejected will be sent a letter I imagine. I'm scared either way.
I plan on calling tomorrow to ask how they are notifying and if my application has been reviewed yet. My biggest worry is that my past academic record will hold me back. I got straight As my final semester but man my grades from two years ago are not pretty.
How does one prepare for rejection? Not to think negative thoughts but it could happen.
Whatever will be will be!!! The right thing will happen, we just have to keep hoping until then. I bet you have a good chance!! Let us know what they say when you call!!! When I asked, they said everyone gets letters....it would reallly help to know if we just get a letter if we are rejected!
Thanks rchristina! It's true...what is meant to be is meant to be. I'll let you guys know what I find out.
My mom just got a huge bag of chocolate chips from Costco...guess who's going to make a ton of cookies!!!
Say...should we both get accepted we should study together...I'm sure there will be lots of sweets involved between the two of us.
Hey all - UPDATE TIME!
So I went down to Baltimore on Thursday and had my interview with the midwifery faculty (one professor in the room with me and two on the phone) as well as a tour/information session/financial aid session. Here are a few things -
1. The interview went well overall though she definitely asked some questions I was not super prepared for. She asked about why I wanted to be a nurse, midwife, why I have chosen Johns Hopkins, how do I feel about my writing, test taking skills, public speaking, etc. They then asked a few situational questions like "If I were a policy maker and wanted to change something about the current scope of midwifery practice what would it be?" or "If I was a midwife and had to collaborate with a doctor how would I go about selling myself and letting them know why I think the midwifery model of care could be more beneficial." I think the interview went well and she essentially ended the conversation by saying I was a very good applicant though and she could see me doing well in the program, but due to the competitiveness of the program they often have to reject very qualified individuals. Yikkesss.
2. Overall, I was still very impressed by how nice everyone was. We got a chance to talk with some students and one said she was waiting for the faculty/staff to "get mean" but they never have! Everyone is really as nice as they seem. That is a relief!
3. The campus is great and I was impressed with their facilities. They had a free Hopkins specific shuttle taking people through all the campuses which is super nice. I stayed with a friend who is currently a senior undergraduate. She lives near the lacrosse fields next to the main campus. From there, the medical campus was about a 15ish bus ride. She suggested that if I do move down I should live closer to the Homewood campus or the Peabody campus in Mount Vernon. Both are just nicer and safer areas in general.
4. About the decision - the admission officer said that they would be calling individuals who were accepted by the 15th and everyone would get a hardcopy letter of acceptance or rejection. I think they prioritize the individuals who are accepted for the call. She didn't say anything about the rejection (other than you'd also get a letter), maybe that was our way of being optimistic.
All-in-all, it made me simultainously very excited and very nervous about what is going to happen. The midwifery decision doesn't come in until late Jan/early Feb so I am worried about the potential to get into just the BSN and not the MSN. At least it would be a foot in the door though I'd be much happier to spend the money going there if I knew I was into the entire program. I'll be crossing my fingers!!
I will post interview notes if anyone is interested.
Please! I am interested to see how the interviews go. I've seen some of the questions which seem pretty standard but I am sure there are unique questions that each candidate is required to answer or maybe program specific. Which program are you applying for?
Haha you guys we have gotten to 14 pages without even being notified yet! Glad I'm not the only obsessive one.
So I didn't get a chance to update because I've only been able to check your posts from my phone and I hate typing a response from it!
When I called, I found out that we could check the status of our applications. Then I emailed the appropriate person and the answer was that they weren't allowed to give out decisions? I just wanted to know if mine had been reviewed at all as that was an issue once. Ah well...I decided not to pursue it.
Other interesting information from the phone call was that we will most likely get sent letters the week of December 15 (as in next week). I mentioned the phone calls and referenced this forum (lol) and she told me that if Admissions have time they will call accepted applicants. Apparently the calling is an extra thing they do...how cute!
I'm half afraid to check my mail box and half excited. So many other people from the past have found out through phone calls...
I was hoping someone would have found out by now. Past threads have gotten acceptances as early as the 9th! I know we have incredible applicants in this thread so fingers crossed for you guys!
Has anyone thought about what sort of reactions they would have to the news? Acceptance or rejection?
p.s. I hope we all get in...we seem like a good community!

I agreed with rort about the phone interview. It definitely made me nervous and I felt like I should have done it in person. I felt bad about it because my brain was frozen and did not perform the best I could. Anyways, it is past now. Let's hope for the best. Good luck everyone who applied for early decision. I really wish time flies quickly, so tomorrow will be Dec 15th! HAHA
