Sounds stressful I'm 50 and have been in construction so I am in great shape. None-the-less I would be uncomfortable disrobing in front of the people I share so many other things with. Your school should think about hiring an artists model or get a volunteer an pay them with a professional massage or something. It seems as perhaps they are trying to get you to understand the being a patientaspect of our field. Their exercise, however, does not duplicate the true environmnet. There is no anonimity in this surender of trust. Sounds like your school or your instructor is out of touch.

This sounds like a good separate thread!

Oh, by the way I am 50 and just started LPN gragiate in a year.

If you feel uncomfortable getting in your underwear infront of future nurses you have no place expecting patients to do the same.

I disagree! I think there is a big difference between a nurse/patient relationship and the relationship between classmates. I will do these things if I have to, but I hope not to have to.

I have heard that one of the local CNA programs only uses dummies and then moves onto real life residents. That school also uses dummies for IV, etc.

maybe the dummies we should use are the program directors from the schools. I'm sure they would be MOST understanding.

I dont think you should be allowed to pass the nursing program without having these done to you.

I am really suprised that in some of your programs you didnt have to do this.

Ok like this my four year old needed a immunization but i dont remember atm. The nurse asked do you want me to give it to her in her arm or in her leg i said in the arm because the leg is insainly painful. and she replied wow i didnt know that.(what is she doing being a nurse giving injections)

Most nurses dont know that if you stimulate the injection site it reduces the pain level to a point where it dont really hurt at all. This is what gives people fears crappy nurses who never had to endure what they put their patients through.

Being required or expected to submit to a state of humility in a class setting does nothing to adjust one into the state of being a sensitive or knowlegable nurse. As others have pointed out, who among us has not had a physical exam already?

Knowing how to give a less painfull injection is not learned by unwanted display of ones-self before others.

I still don't get the point!

LOL!! I am sure using the words "digital rectal exam" might change their minds regarding policy.

Thankfully it seems the exception versus the rule in regards to students being in their underwear or topless in front of one another. It seems nursing schools were actually more invasive years ago.

We did EKG's on each other, but we wore sports bras, so it wasn't as bad as it sounds. We did physical exams on each other including height, weight, bowel sounds, lung and heart sounds, but we didn't undress for that. We weren't allowed to do IVs on each other because of liability issues. I wish we could have, really. It would have been nice to get the experience of a real vein instead of just a dummy arm.

I'm just glad I changed graduate programs before having to do pelvics with my classmates -- I was humiliated enough doing the PE with a young classmate at my last program (although I'll have to redo this). The instructor had a field day examining my body (I usually get this response wherever I go for health care; they drag students in to look at me). I could not bear the thought of subjecting myself to this humiliation, being the only student over 40, who isn't gorgeous, skinny, and fit. I also have a physical deformity and lots of scars which I would die to have these kids see. Quasimodo amongst the elite. (I am permanently single, too, for the same reason.) The program I'm in now has nurses mostly over 35, all body types, all levels of physical attractiveness, so I'm not going to be nearly as self-consious or humiliated.

We did not have to strip down, but when we did physical assessment, like the heart and lung stuff, we were told to wear shorts and tanktops.

For our testouts, we did used our classmates, you could pick them too.

Not too bad, but we did have a lame theory class during our first semester.. SO many bad role playing things.. :(

Why not? I hardly feel that being naked in front of my classmates has anything to do with learning assessment skills.

I am really suprised that in some of your programs you didnt have to do this.

Really? I didn't and am as competant as anyone who has.

The deltoid is less painful than the VS for everyone?

my school had a fake hospital day where we wore shorts and tank tops or short sleeves to practice baths but we only did the extremities. We also had to feed one another and brush each others teeth. We had a lot of fun with it though. I can't imagine having to get completely naked or even down to underwear.... EEEEKKK! Thats priviledged or need to know basis only and my fellow students at the time were neither.

My school makes us disrobe and do physical assessments on each other and it was absolutely mortifying. Mostly because I had to get nearly naked in a room with half my classmates (including guys). Even more so because I am overweight and my partner was one of those gorgeous teeny tiny girls who works out every day. Despite that, she was far more modest than I (in the sense that she wouldn't let me practice the breast exam on her).

When it came time to do a full physical assessment for a grade, I felt extremely unprepared because she'd never let me practice the breast exam and a few other things before. Also, having to be almost naked in front of two of your instructors the first semster in the nursing program is rather embarassing. :imbar

You had to do a breast exam on another classmate?

If I'm ever told to disrobe in clinicals I'll be telling the instructor "I'll do it but you have to pay me first."

I would never disrobe for a classmate. I would fight that one until they changed the rules or kicked me out of school.

My shcool has been pretty good. We don't wear stupid uniforms, all of our rules seem to make sense, and there is no nudity or semi-nudity
