Study while commuting???

I'm not looking for ideas on how to not get caught read while driving (lol), just wondering if anyone records lectures or is it possible to record lectures to listen to while driving. I will be commuting about an hour each way to nursing school this fall and I'm trying to figure out how to make that productive time. And its a rural commute so taking a bus is not an option nor is car pooling.

I'm probably the only person to not own a smart phone or a laptop (hear I'll be needing both for nursing school though so that will soon change) so here is one idea I had: can I record lectures on a smart phone or a laptop so I can listen to them while I drive? Anyone out there do that?

I also have the livescribe pen and LOVE it. I believe you can print your own dot paper for it too, though I personally have not tried that. The notebooks are about $25 for a pack of 4 on amazon. If you're really interested in getting a good deal on the pen though you can buy the refurbished ones from the store direct or go on ebay/amazon for used deals. Just make sure you do a reset before recording any notes!

One last thing I'll add to loving this pen is you can use an app so it'll turn your notes into flashcards.. pretty helpful. I love this pen, it's been a lifesaver!

I love that app! I used it all the time in A&P and Micro. I also like that you can put all of your stuff in Evernote and add information from other resources too...it is an awesome way to compile everything for projects.

Check the website associated with your books. Ours are all Elsevier & their evolve website has audio lectures for the chapters. You can download them onto a laptop or into iTunes if you get an iPod/iphone. I have an hour commute, so I download each chapter summary (approx 5-10 min) long & listen to them on the way. On test days, I have a friend that I call (my car has Bluetooth, so my phone s hands free). We review on the phone during our commutes. That's always an option, too!

What's the app called for the live scribe pen?

A bit off topic, but I loved flashcard exchange.com to make flash cards for all those bugs in Medical Microbiology and I plan to use it again for nursing classes. I'm Pipestone on there with my big one set of cards.

I personally found the larger cards to be easier to study... most of the time I didn't bother to cut them apart, they make great study tools just left online where they have memorization activities and online quizes or printed out with the papers just folded in half to hide the answers.

Thanks CalRNtoBe2013. I love the idea of quality downloads from textbook companies too! Thanks for all the great info!

Thanks ebailey1218: very helpful info. I don't currently have a smart phone (just the free 'dumb phone' that came free from Rogers when they switched to digital from analog) so I am a dinosaur, but a new iPhone is in the plans for fall since I want to make sure that my home computer (Mac) can work with my future phone and laptop.

For the record, I use Flashcard exchange as well. But I did find it difficult to share flashcard sets via mobile. All of my friends use smartphones, and when I would make flashcards for tests and such, the best way to share it with them was via the public link from the website. But in doing that, they had to use the web version on their phones to study instead of being able to link them to the app.

I recorded lectures my first semester for my two hour commute both ways!! I found that I would just daze off and wouldn't even listen in. There were always interruptions from people asking questions. Drove me insane. I finally decided to use those hours in my car for my SANITY!! Listening to Elvis Duran on Z100 helped me relax before a long day at school!! And on my way home I would just make mental notes and rethink the info I was given for the day. I did much better after I tossed the recordings. The End.

It makes all the money I spent on books feel a little more worth it when I use the resources online. It only takes 5 minutes to register the texts on the publisher's website & I think it's absolutely worth it!

A nice tip I read somewhere is that someone will record themselves reading through their notes and they listen to that on their commutes. I feel like that would work better for me than a boring professor lecture.

Then you learn while speaking and recording the material as well as listening to it.

I record my lectures on my smart phone. I have to walk to school and it takes me an hour. So if I have a test I will plug in my headphones and listen to it on the way.

I'd get an iPhone or an iPod touch. The voice quality was surprisingly good. Plus with my iPhone I can play it without headphones in and still hear them talk. I sold my soul to apple but I am sure the galaxy works or other android phones. Ipod touches have bigger space. I bought a 64 gb fourth generation when the fifth came out. Also otterboxes are a must have.
