I'm still finishing off my pre-reqs and will be applying for nursing school next Fall. I have 3 children who are 4, 5, and 7 and I was thinking yesterday what on earth will I do if they get sick! I would have to miss school and stay home with them if they did get sick, my hubby is in the army and couldn't take time off easily. So if you have kids what do you do if they get sick...do you have a plan in place? Do nursing schools tend to work around those with children or is it no excuse?
Thanks,
Louise.

I don't start the nursing program for a few weeks. I've been trying to line up occasional babysitters who are willing to keep sick kids. I have a friend who has offered if it's a day when she's not in school. If I'm really desperate, I might have to resort to calling my Dad who lives an hour away and asking him if he can take the day off (he's a teacher), drive here and help out. I'm thinking of posting for occasional sitters on one of the babysitting websites. I'll probably do some more begging for sitters on Facebook : ) I 'm stressing about this a lot because my school doesn't "understand", you must have it covered.
That's what I was thinking too...just putting together a list of last minute babysitters who will watch sick kids....I hate the thought of someone else looking after my babies while they are sick :-(

My husband will be my back up but he can get off easily and work from home if need be. Do you know any other moms from your child's school? Maybe one of the stay at home moms would understand.

Wow... I'm so fortunate to have a mother-in-law that live only 7 mins away... also my brother-in-law works nights so he will be able to help out when needed too. When my mom retires, she can always help too and they live even closer. Are there any neighbors that you would trust to watch your kids if they were sick?

Some hospitals have "sick child" day care. (Expensive though).

At my orientation a few weeks ago, they told us to have a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. They said you have to attend class and being sick (or sick kids) is no excuse for missing a test (documented emergencies are the exception). Fortunately my husband can take sick time for the kids and my mother will be a backup for him.
I just don't know how single moms do it if they don't have a super great support system. There are several nursing programs in my area and they all make it clear....Nursing School must come first and if you can't accept that, don't go. Harsh but true. I can understand it though because would you want YOUR nurse to have missed the day they were taught injections? or IV's? or drug interactions?

My husband works afternoons, so he's my plan A--daddy loses sleep to care for our sick child. But we do have plan B, C, & D. Plan C costs us extra gas and time; plan D is the costliest, but we do what we have to.

My husband would take the time off, but my sitter is willing to watch them and keep them seperate from her kids if that were the case. We have to have a plan A, B and C as well! If we do have to stay home with sick kids (or ourselves even) we have to have a drs note to excuse the absence. They mark us 3% if we are absent!

I hate it when mothers lie about their kids being sick just because they are to lazy to study for the test. Their children get sick only when we have tests and presentations, but they are able to make up the test the day after. Really?!
I don't know of anyone who does that. If you are a mom and you were able to get accepted into my program, then you must have pretty awesome time management and study skills! Because those of us who have been posting on this board are responsible parents and students, we are doing our best to support each other in trying to work out the details of sick childcare. Before school even begins. I have taken tests after being up all night with a sick toddler. If I missed a test because one of my kids became sick (which children who are in daycare do often), I would be able to take the test the next day probably because I wouldn't want it hanging over my head or an unfair advantage by having lots of additional study time. I would be able to do that and rock it because I kill myself to keep up with my studying.

Oh I am not a mom, but I can understand that kids just Like every human being get sick and kids should always come first and then school. I was just talking about some crazy moms that I know, the sad part is that they always tell me "I will not take the test bc i am not ready, can you tell me the answers" yeah ok ,I am gonna risk my education for a crazy lady who wants to cheat. They say " I am going to tell the instructor my kid is sick bla bla bla."
