I just thought I would post this for those that may benefit. I thought this was a very interesting idea for those students whose schools have been destroyed by Katrina.

I just received an email from my school and they are offering 10 spots starting 9/6/05 for displaced students free of charge until they graduate. I know it's a small number but anything helps. :)

The University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University are accepting students who are displaced. I've heard that they are charging in-state tuition to these students.

I know one girl came in to the science resource room getting an approval signed that who went to school in NO.
I'm not sure if the CC is doing any special things for them, or just allowing them to take classes in which they were previously enrolled in in NO.
My children's school district will be having many of them come to the schools, as well as my nieces school district. The H.S. were my daughter attends is only in its second school year, so many of the classrooms are not even being used. I'm not sure who is going to teach them.
Maybe they are allowing other state's teachers to come as they are with nurses???
I'm very pleased to know that the children, or at least many of the children, won't get behind due to this tragedy.

According to fox news they are hiring the teachers as well as making room for the students.

Will those hired teachers be from NO, or Texas certified teachers?
They were talking about the teachers who no longer have a school to teach at. They'll probably fast track what ever needs to be done if they are in Texas. A lot of the students and teachers have migrated north in the same state.

There was a story on local news here about a Tulane student now going to San Diego State--I think there will be several--she said the college had comp'd her everything, and it was all waiting for her--books, classes, etc. Thank goodness something is going ok!

Several states and universities have made the same offer. If a student has already paid, they will not be charged. And the local news just reported that Tulane will be closed for a year. And that displaced students may attend classes at other colleges and have all their credits transferred back, when it reopens.
