Student Parents??

I am a single parent to a 6 year old boy. It has been hard on the both of us, but well worth it. I started school when he was 4 months old, so he is used to it and so am I. It can be hard at times juggling his homework, my own, the house and just life in general. But I guess we know nothing different so we just deal with it the best way we can. He understands that I am going to school to be a nusrse, and now he wants to be one too.

I really have no real advice, just letting you know there are parents that do this.

There are a ton of parents here.

I have two girls ages 5 and 2 and I go to school full-time and also homeschool my kids while maintaining a high GPA. It certainly can be done though it is not always easy. I find just as long as I study and keep up with my classes it is really not that big of a deal and I enjoy it a lot.

You will do fine!

There are many, many parents here in every conceivable set of circumstances. It's always hard - just this morning my 10-year old daughter had a meltdown because I hadn't had time to wash her favorite sweatshirt :rolleyes: ... but it's well worth it. Good luck to you!

I am struggling with this as well...I started a thread you might want to read entitled Student moms of young children. Or something like that! LOL! Anyways, I am starting back full time in the fall and have a four year old, 2 year old and five month old. When I went for one semester in 2001, I only had my son and was pregnant but it was a nice break for both of us for me to be away.

I have come to the conclusion that we will be great role models for the kids and that they will adjust (this from everyone here chiming in and giving me their opinions!)

I am a single mother of a 2.5 year old. There are plenty of parents that are in my class. It's tough, but it sounds like your husband will be of help. I found that my biggest problem was finding time to study, but you might have a different problem. Just don't be afraid to tackle whatever problems might come up. For me, I found that going to bed with my daughter around 8-9, and waking up around 3-4 when she was still asleep, and the house was quiet was extremely helpful. Just play around with whatever might help you, and go for it. If you really want to do this, I promise it can be done. One other thing that you might find interesting. I've found in my class that it is the "traditional students" that are having trouble passing the class, and us "Non-traditional students" aren't having any troubles at all. I think it just depends on how much priority you give it. Don't forget your goal!

In terms of studying, I', hoping I'll be fine. My boys are in bed at 8pm, and I have Thurs/Fri where they are in daycare and I have no classes, but I also have to work during those hours too. I just have to keep reminding myself it will all pay off on in the end!

What about stress and not freaking on the kids? This is my main concern...3 boys 6, 2, almost 1.....starting f/t in the fall and working weekends. hmmmm.

I am married work as a STNA fulltime (3-12hr shifts),and have two boys ages 5 and 1. Also, my nursing classes start September 20th and I am due with my third child September 29th! A bit of a suprise there!

I am not going to work fulltime once nursing actually starts, only on Friday and Saturdays. However, I have to attend classes/labs etc everyday, but will be home by 2:30 most days. My clinicals are halfdays and on fridays. I am very nervous but excited at the same time. It feels like I finally have direction in my life (as far as a career go).

I went to school when I was pregnant with my second too. In fact, my final for the summer semester was scheduled on her due date. I ended up dropping that class and it is a good thing I did because she came right on time!

Can I ask you what you are going to do about your classes when you have the baby?

Wow Jules, you're gonna be busy, lol. We toyed around with having babe #3 before I started classes, as now I'm looking at a summer '07 EDD at the earliest.

I'll be working too while in school, but I work from home and can do it late evenings while the boys are sleeping. We're also fortunate enough to qualify for subsidy daycare, so that will help with money too! Just waiting to hear how much financial aid I'll be getting so I can plan out my budget!!

Hi - I'm a mom with 5 teenagers and have almost survived nursing school. It was definitely a juggling act. I typed papers while the TV was on, folks needed help with homework, conflicts needed to be resolved, etc. I have a supportive husband so that really helped. I found a "quiet spot" in the house (well almost quiet spot). The children knew when Mom was there I needed the time to do some real studying (especially if they could see the nursing books scattered around me.....) :rolleyes:
