Student nurse Jack MacFarland... Discuss

Not a huge Will & Grace fan, but am loving Jack in nursing school. I love it for these reasons:

Instead of getting dumb blond & bimbo jokes, the show using humor related to nursing. How bout Jack using his skills to get dates. "I'm Jack, student nurse. If anyone needs a breast exam... men only, send them over" That joke while professionally inappropriate was hilarious.

It's not like nursing school, but I have understood every piece of dialogue and obviously they hired a consultant to write some of the material. How about when the tough instructor pimped Jack on some vital signs basics. Loved it cause I could answer the questions.

While it is played for laughs, you can tell nursing school is serious business showing students getting together to study & this has been the only occupation Jack has showed real emotion toward.

Any other views on the only student nurse prominently shown on tv right now?

i liked the fact that the students (barring jack) took their studies seriously.

jack is HILARIOUS and karen made me pee my pants when she was threatening one of the nursing instructors. :devil: :chuckle i hope that he continues on as a student nurse.

Don't really watch Will & Grace much (not much time for T.V.) but my first knee-jerk thought is that I don't like the implication that gay men and women are nurses. Hoping not to get flamed here...I'm not trying to start a confrontation. Not that there is anything at all wrong with gay men in nursing -- but kind of hard to lure straight guys into nursing when it is perceived as a profession for women or gay men. Just that's my two cents. I've been working with some really smart, sexy, married men in my preceptorship -- and the culture created by having men (straight and gay) in the workplace is one I really love.

i think there is a straight male student. as well as students of other cultures/ethnicities. pretty PC if you ask me.

I think I understand. It's a perception that could typecast a profession to the point of exclusion. However, anyone who is that homophobic is probably someone I don't think would be particularly compassionate to the different lifestyles of a hospital population. Maybe that's my misperception.

For the humor sake and nothing else. That show is just so funny. I watch that show every week and enjoy it for the pure entertainment of it. :)

I love, love, love that show. Its the only night I watch TV. The interactions between Jack and Karen are just *too* funny. Im liking him as a student nurse too. Havent seen some episodes that you mentioned (Karen yelling at intructor). Bummed I missed it. Im not too worried that Jack will deter a potential candidate from nursing... if anything, it might recruit more! lol...

I love this show. Jack becoming a nurse is hillarious. It is a very silly show, but I think it is well written and, of course, well acted. Every single member of that cast is a good actress/actor. I love Jack throwing his weight around as a sn, just too funny.

OMG!! *LOVE* that show! I have been a fan for years - and when this storyline came along I just freaked out!!

First, for those who don't like the "stereotypes" etc..... I think this show is perfectly acceptable, simply because of the sillyness of it (it's not like its a drama) This show "pokes fun" at all sorts of topics - and they tell lots of gay jokes - really it's all in fun!!

And Jack just loves his Birkenstocks! I sware I laugh so hard watching that sometimes I pee a little!!!!! LOL!

I don't have a lot of time to watch TV, but when I do, my favorite shows are Will & Grace, Scrubs, ER and Frasier.

I, too, love the episodes of Will & Grace with Jack as a SN. Is Karen in nursing school, too? :roll

Yep, gotta love student nurse jack mcfarland! I missed Karen flaming the nursing instructor. BUt the show is great. I understand the stereotype of only gay men and women are nurses, but really, at least we are getting some positive press on the TV with Jack! At least he's not an ape this time (like on Passions....that's another thing entirely). It was too funny when Jack had to look at his card re: doing the heimlich to save candice burgman. :)

I think that it is soo cute! I loved seeing him in his whites and clogs :D I think we may gain a few more nurses from the exposure.
