Student & Scrubs

Published

I am starting the CNA course at Wake Tech at the end of the month and I am going to purchase my scrubs. I plan on looking for work as a CNA and in a year or so after applying for the RN program. I figured since I was going to start looking for work after spending a few extra dollars on more comfortable Navy Blue scrubs shouldn't be an issue, should it?

I would wait to spend a lot of money until you know what you are allowed to wear. My hospital and most in my area have specific uniforms or color requirements for RN's, CNA's etc.

I did my CNA there- they will tell you buy navy blue scrubs. I definitely spent a little bit more money on mine and I'm glad that I did because I wear them all the time to work :)

Chances are you will be comfortable for school and clinicals but you will not be able to wear the same color at your first job. Then when you get into a RN program you will have to wear a specific color for that too. It really depends upon what your budget is like. I would not invest in anything too expensive since you might not wear it after your class ends.

For class, I would invest in one or two nice sets, but wait to buy more until you find out where you'll be working afterwards and what you'll be doing. But I absolutely think it is worth it to spend a little more to be comfy! I like Koi and Cherokee.

I agree with waiting until after you've found work to buy very many pairs (or super expensive ones). For my CNA class I had to wear royal blue for clinicals, but at my job we have to wear khaki. I only wore my royal blue for about a month and I still have them but will probably never wear them again. It's the same with nursing school...I have to wear crimson to clinicals, but once I finish school, the hospital I'll be working at requires nurses to wear navy blue. So when I'm done with nursing school I will have several pairs of royal blue and crimson and a TON of khaki that I will probably never wear again. And nice scrubs can really add up in price! I've learned to go with the bargain pairs ($10 a pair) for school, and save spending big bucks on super comfy ones for once I start working as an RN!
