Stuck Pre-Nursing Student; Feeling Frustrated

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

I am currently completing my last pre-req at community college, Microbiology. I am hoping to get into the RN program for the Fall. This will be my second time applying, was waitlisted last year, at spot 84. I am feeling a bit down lately. Trying to stay positive that I will get in this round, but am worried I may not.

My current plan is, if I don't get in this round, getting my bachelors in Public Health. I currently work as a HHA in town and love it. So I think if I get my BS and then apply for accelerated BSN programs.

Does this sound like a good route? Hate to waste money, you know? I just need advice of fellow students and current nurses. I have also contemplated ultrasound and radiology tech, since they can branch to different avenues, but nursing is my true passion.

Thank you!

$30k sounds VERY HIGH for an LPN program...do you have to have a bachelor's to apply to ABSN? Maybe you just need to look at the amount of credit hours needed to get into the program and take some more classes....

One word of caution on getting your Bachelors in order to do an ABSN. Financial Aid is MUCH less available to you if you've already got a Bachelors. I got mine (BS in Health Education) while waiting to get into a program and the only federal aid available to me now is private student loans. I lucked out and my employer has tuition reimbursement, but if money is a factor for you thenit is something to keep in mind before continuing.

Hello, it sounds ok to me, I'am a LPN and now at the age of 44 y/o, Im doing my last few preq for the RN school here in La. And the fact that I had to start all over again, well you know was stressful, and to top it off,the year I want to start which would be the Fall of 2014, I cant. Told me to apply in Spring of 2015, I know its somewhat not like yours, but with all of this waiting Im thinking about getting into another field, because if you have a BA in anything you can get into a RN program, isnt that funny!!!!!! So, good luck!

Don't you hate that? You get your hopes up to start a certain date and then find out you can't. I wish you luck!!

Have you talked to others in or applying to the program you're wanting? I know where I am, it's common for it to take 2-3 times applying before getting in, and I knew that going in. I applied for hospital sponsorships (have you called around to find out if there are any for your program?) and got in my first time. It's a long road and frustrating, but I think that down the line, it will all be worth it and those couple of "wasted" semesters won't seem like such a big deal.

Oh yes, I know people it took three times to get in. I guess I'm being a baby, if I want it, I'll have to wait: ).

No, not around here to my knowledge. The application asks where you work, thought my hospital job connection would help me since they do clinicians their and nurse manager was an instructor. Nope, didn't.

It took two rounds of applications to get into my LPN - RN transition program. Try again. Last time you were waitlisted, not rejected outright. You will be a more attractive candidate this time around because you will have more classes completed. If you don't get in you could start doing classes towards another degree, but keep applying.

I would consider ultrasound tech, you can specialize if you want and it pays as much as if not more than nursing! Less stress, better working conditions, taking care of one patient at a time, not juggling many and more chance to get a Monday thru Friday without weekends and holidays! Radiation tech doesn't pay that much more than CNA or LPN and less jobs available at least where I live. It took someone several years to get a job with that degree, working as a CNA in the meantime and then had to move to a rural area.

The sonography program at one if the schools here is harder to get into than nursing. They only take 6 people per semester, so your gpa has to be up there. However, they make way more than nurses do starting out. About $60 k.

It's been 18 months since I became an RN and I'm still looking for work (almost finished with an RN-BSN program, too). Think about other options.

Ugh, that is frustrating. What area are you in? I hope you find something soon. I have been thinking about Phlebotomy. They so.pretty well. I figure I can always go back later in life.
