I hear so much talk about striking that it scares me to think that there are so many people who would abandon their patients so easily. Maybe in some cases where safety is an issue I could consider striking (after all other methods have failed). I feel that nurses need to stand together more politically but not by striking. There is currently too much fighting between nurses at this point (adn,BSN, MSN, CNA etc.)
When people strike I hear them talk bad about agency workers (scabs). Does this mean you would like to see no one show up??
Does this mean you would like to see your patients suffer??
If so maybe it is time for you to leave nursing....

Well, Jared, I have been reading this thread tonight (while doing laundry after midnight here; at home-- I don't ever get to surf the net at work either!), and wondered where you were going with it. I had viewed your website before and felt that it was some sort of a class site or graduation gag site; that's why I hadn't commented on it. You are young (it definitely shows in the website humor), and remind me of my son who often shoots off his mouth and then finds out he should have thought first (he's 22, funny, and bright- and ADHD).
If you were pulling our leg or using this as a research project; you have probably made several nurses quite upset with you. Bedside nursing is hard work and those of us who are still doing it after so many years may not appreciate having our chains pulled just to see how we react.
Strikes are very serious business to all of us; no nurse ever enters into a strike without thinking long and hard about it. I've been there before and am currently working under a contract that was ratified by mistake. With a strike, the patient suffers, the nurse suffers, the family of the nurse suffers, and the hospital suffers. The trust between the nurses and the hospital is shattered, and it takes many years for decent communication to begin again.
You talk about cannibalism (nurses eating their young), stop and think what you just did and give that a name. Don't jerk us around; ASK our opinions and we will answer honestly, and I'm sure the discussion will be even more interesting than this one.
You got a lot of replies because this is an issue some of us are facing right now. Again, I'll ask you Jared, what should we do? What is the solution if not striking? We are pretty united, so I don't think teamwork is the problem. So someone tell me what I should be doing to fix things because I am going to meet a recruiter from the States tomorow and if the offer is good I might take it.

I would like to mention that I am at work - and am "surfing the net." Also, there are numerous others who do so as well...you know who you are.
But can we please stop with the personal insults????????????????? It gets REAL old REAL quick and starts to speak of your true maturity and intelligence level. Learn to debate, people.
