The nursing unions in MA are very strong and getting great results. Safer staffing and some of the best paid nurses in the country.

New Grads must have a BSN, others with 1 year experience are considered.
Thanks for the info.. Luckily I have both..
MGH has one the highest paid nurses in the state and it is one of the best hospitals. (BI is the other and they do the same thing). They have a waiting list of people wanting to work there now so they are doing this. Every now and then they do this but the reality is there are just not enough nurses so they can only do this sporatically.
Now let's just say for round numbers a nurse works 36 hours a week so that's 144 hours a month. At a dollar/hour after taxes that might be around $100 take home pay. All my figures are approximate. So right out of the gate the nurse is down approimately a dollar an hour.
Seems to me a union member is already behind the eight ball. They need two good raises to be ahead after they "vote" in the union. One to recoup their monthy dues and the other to make more money than before the union came in.
BTW notice I put "vote" in quotes.. Seems many unions don't want a secret vote to get them in they want a card check that many potential carriers have been intimidated and coerced into signing.
Oh but wait when there is a decertification move then the union wants a secret ballot.
Curious concepts to say the least.
BTW I just checked on www.hospitalsoup.com Over 30 jobs openings for RN's. STAFF RN's only listed. Is that the wait list?

" Big Love " governor Romney® wants to break the union...... http://www.massnurses.org/News/2006/03/unit7_1000_days.htm :angryfire
Almost three years. And still no results. Boy maybe they should raise the union dues. That might help.:angryfire

Just spoke to a nurse who went to a carreer fair stated, little to no jobs at MGH or any of the trauma 1 hospitals in Boston. Older nures who were working part time and per diem are coming back full time and nurses thought to be retiring are not and finally they hired to many new grads last year.
Then they need to update their website. Most of the jobs I saw there were posted early last week.
I am pretty sure with the bill that will be passing for patient nurse ratio they will be needing a lot of nurses in all the hospitals because the ED's will be full with patients staying overnight and with a ratio of 1 to 1 for critical, 1-2 for cardiac and 1-3 for the others good luck. I currently have 1 -7 on nights regardless. We are 3 RNS on the night shift regardless of how many patients we have.
