Published

Hi everyone! I am applying to Stony Brook's ABSN and wanted to create this thread for anyone who wanted to share stats, updates or need assistance!

Has anyone Visited the Campus of Stony Brook!

the academic calendar on the website has the semester dates up. it's 6/6 to 8/16 for our 10-week Summer, then a 1 week break, then 15-week fall semester, then about a 1 month break, then 12-week Spring semester + 3 week capstone. Based on past threads, Summer classes are all day MWF, Tues is skills lab, then clinicals are 12 hours Thursday, Sat or Sun. But, can't say for sure that this will still be the case for this Summer.

I think we should have 2 full days off in the Summer but we won't know which until they give clinical assignments and our schedules. Pretty sure everything except orientation is going to be in person. My neurotic brain is having a lot of trouble dealing wtih all the not knowing, so I have been studying past threads a lot LOL

This was really helpful thank you so much!

Where can I find the academic calendar for the ABSN program? I can't seem to find it.

Did anyone who applied for FAFSA hear back yet? I'm not sure how eligibility works because this would be my 5th-year undergrad technically. Would anyone happen to know any information regarding this?

Has anyone received any email confirmation of enrollment after paying for the tuition deposit/orientation deposit? The lack of communication from the program is making me nervous about not being in track with what I need to do to be enrolled LOL

I didn't even submit mine yet. I'm independent of my parents, but the form says if you're entering a nursing program, you may want to report your parents' info anyway - except it doesn't elaborate on this at all so I'm not sure if I should report or not. I would think you can still be eligible for something through federal or TAP, even though it may just be unsubsidized loans. We are probably better off calling Stony Brook's fin aid office for any questions though.

I emailed stony brook’s financial aid office because I had the same predicament with the similar questions. They replied to me:

“There is a significant proof threshold that must be met to prove that your are independent. Self supporting activities do not inherently qualify you for independent status. Unless there was, what we call, an "involuntary dissolution of the family dynamic", it  most often is that case that you will still need to provide your parental information.

If you do have proof (through police reports, third party professionals, court documentation, etc) that you no longer have any contact with your biological parents, we can talk about the process to proceed,“

so basically, even though I’m “independent,” I still have to report my parental information.. sigh.

Oh wow that’s annoying.. do you or anyone else know when the deadline is to apply for FASFA/ tap?

Oh interesting. It's all confusing. I'm definitely independent because of my advanced age LOL, but I found out sometimes there are certain aid packages for certain majors that can only be granted if you provide your parents info (ie if you are from a low-income background), but I contacted Stony Brook and they said as an independent student I'll only be eligible for indepedent level financial aid packages, and there are no awards for students who are independent who also list their parents' info.

Exactly. I don’t want to limit myself to the amount of aid I can get just because I don’t report my parents financial information.

As for the deadline for financial aid, I suggest getting it done as quickly as you can. The FAFSA opened on October 1st, and SBU’s priority deadline was February 15th. They still accept applications for aid after this, but you may not be priority to receive the most. Still depends on your financial situation though. From experience at another SUNY, they can and will back pay if you provide more info throughout the year to prove you need more aid.

I think I read in past forums that most students got $12,000. I'm guessing they meant in loans, because it's a second bachelors degree and we're excluded from certain other aid like grants. Stony Brook's Fin Aid office is really good with responding via email/phone.

Hello everyone, so I noticed I got an email today from Stony saying that they won’t send any information until mid to late April but I was doing research about Summer housing because I know applications start in 3 days. So I’m not sure if I should wait to hear from them or should I have play it safe and put my Summer housing application in. Is anyone else planning on dorming?
