Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

Still nothing!!!. Hey from my point of veiw you 40 somethingers ARE young!!!!! May have to change my screen name to "Old Buckeroo"!

To clarify, not saying here that a 4.0 GPA is going to guarantee anything, but it improves your chances and can't hurt to have in your profile. I guess I will never know exactly what combination of factors motivated the admissions committee to give my application a nod. But had I not been accepted once again, I would take steps to find out what is keeping me from getting in. I would want to know that. It is not proactive to proceed on improvement without this information. Never giving up means just that, persevering until you get to your goal.

And never resign yourself to the fact that you are too old: I am almost 42 myself and don't consider myself old in the least. Notice that I don't even add the "years old" phrase when I say my age - because that is all it is - just a number. Once you start to say that you are old, the mind and body starts to believe it and goals and motivation start breaking down. It's all in the mindset. I guess it works, because many people have pegged me as being 10 years younger that I really am. Nice reward! :)

If you can afford to wait and reapply, do it! If not, pursue your plan B towards nursing. If your plan B involves something away from nursing, then nursing should not have been plan A. Don't let this one instance slam the brakes on your dreams.

I personally would still wait for a letter in the mail about the decision. All these SOLAR rejections and no acceptances is just fishy. Besides, didn't they keep saying that decisions won't be released until later in April?

For the record, you are as old as you feel!! And don't use the word old....mature is more appropriate :)

As for the acceptances...it is very weird that rejections are coming before acceptances.

Also, I believe every school has their own rubric as to what makes a good candidate. From what I gather from the information sessions, it is really unknown to an applicant what they are really looking for. Apparently there are some applicants who have been accepted into the program with low gpas, but have good recommendation letters and an amazing essay. And then there are those who have high gpas, good recommendation letters and a poor essay. It really makes me wonder as to what they look for.

The last thing I am doing is giving up my dream of nursing. Stony Brook is not the only way to become a nurse (just a good way :) )

I did find it strange that just yesterday morning I was told mid-late April and than that night decisions were posted. I'd love to believe that an error was made, but probably highly unlikely.

I'm glad to see you're not giving up! I find it quite strange that you were told mid-late April then that night???? Very strange indeed!!!

KJM, you are absolutely right!!! It might be a different path to where you want to go, but keep at it and you WILL get there!

I did not get in either...but it was a long shot because I have not finished my prereqs. I am definitely applying again but I am a little discouraged seeing how great everyones credentials are and not making it into the program. I am so suprised!

Nothing yet... :anbd:

I definitely don't feel old at all...I am very athletic and my teenagers keep me young! I have no desire to do anything but nursing at this point; it is where my heart is for sure. But the fact is, the time line for me to become an RN and bring in a salary for my family is now. If this was at a different stage of life I would not feel so badly. I had to be strong and positive in front of my kids in order to be a good example for them. Unfortunatley, my daughter is bound to get rejection letters from colleges next year. I want her to know that it is ok, to stay positive, and that if her first choice doesn't work out, that she will have a back up plan like myself. It is just tough when you put your heart and soul into grades, essay, and shining reccomendations, and then rejection??

Still nothing on Solar!!! The waiting is driving me crazy!!! I can't believe that there hasn't been one acceptance yet!!! Are there still a lot of people that haven't received anything yet???

Did you receive an email saying that decisions have been made? I just received one this morning. It's probably a good thing if you haven't heard yet, could mean you're accepted or waitlisted, since everyone that has heard has been rejected.

bern69, I definitely hear ya, it's hard to do everything you could and be rejected and have no idea why. I know they can't tell everyone why they were rejected, but I still wish I knew why. Even though i shouldn't be worried about getting into SCCC program, I am after being rejected from SBU. I only had a plan a (stony brook) and a plan b (suffolk), if plan b fails too I won't know what to do.

Believe it or not, I am concerned about getting accepted to SCCC nursing as well. That also is very competitive. My friend applied to the night program with a 3.9 and was waitlisted (and never ended up getting called) and another friend had 4.0 going for LPN to rn and she was waitlisted. Nothing is a sure thing. Did the people who were denied get a letter in the mail? Also, was all documentation submitted on time? Trying to narrow done why. When everyone has gotten an answer, I want to put in a call to try and find out what to do better possibly for next time.

In regards to Suffolk, according to their info sessions, they look at the 4pre-reqs and start with the people with all A's in them and then fill the spots from there, but who really knows.

I didn't get a letter in the mail from Stony Brook, but I got an email saying that I will get a letter. All my documentation was in on time, by the skin of my teeth, but still on time.
