Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone, I'm currently in the Stony Brook accelerated (1 year) program and here to help with questions you might have. It was useful for me to look at the thread from last year when I was applying so I wanted to get one started for all of you. Feel free to post questions or message me. I hope this is helpful.

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! I LITERALLY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THIS CLEAR TYPE OF ANSWER OUT ANY ADVISER. You have given me so much relief right now!

Hey everyone. Congratulations to those that have been accepted. I am graduating in May. My major is Sport Leadership & Management with a Coaching concentration. By the time I was sure this was the path I wanted to take and began the process of researching programs and applying, I had missed the deadline for Stonybrook. I didn't really want to wait the full year after graduating to start, preferring to go straight into the program while I was on an academic roll but the program and the pricing is very attractive. I have other acceptances - Quinnipiac, Northeastern, waiting on NYU - but have enrolled in a CNA program right after graduation in hopes of being able to work the month of August before beginning a program in the Fall. Now I'm beginning to consider waiting for Stonybrook's next class and gaining experience with my CNA.

I have read through a lot of this thread but may have missed some things so apologies if this has been answered. Are there many people in the cohort that have come to the program straight off their first BS or are most of the people returning after working and having health care experience. I don't really have any experience now, just a student volunteer rotation back in high school but assuming I go the CNA route I should have some by application time.

Trying to gauge my chances of acceptance, because I'm afraid to pass on acceptances I have and then not get in. Can anyone give me an idea - or their thoughts. Maybe someone who has been in the program and is familiar with the stats of the current cohort?

Overall GPA: 3.73

Pre-reqs:

- A&P I: A

- A&P II: A-

- Stats: A

- Dev. Psych: A

- Micro: in progress but currently A with B in Lab

- Chem: in progress but currently A with A- in Lab

- Nutrition: A

Any input would be appreciated. Really happy for all of you. Good luck with the program!

Hi everyone,

I am applying for the accelerated nursing program this summer. I wonder if anyone can comment on the competitiveness of the admissions and offer advise on how to become a competitive applicant. Thank you!

Nik it's hard to saw what your chances are, obviously you have the grades but it takes more then that to get it. This year they had unusually high numbers of applicants, something like 1500 I think. So to get to the interview your essay needs to be stellar and you should have strong references. If you have acceptances at other places you should just go for it! How disappointed would you be if you waited and didn't get it? If those places have 2 year programs you will finish the same time anyway. I have to say though that a great gpa does not mean you will get in, they look for more then that. Does being a CNA mean you will get in? I doubt it. If you are ready and motivated just enroll in the fall

Hello,

I am so relieved that someone has one of these blogs for aspiring applicants! Thank you!

I am looking at the course requirements to apply and I have 3 questions:

1. What is Lifespan Development? Is that like Developmental Psychology? Do you know if any similar class can be substitiuted for this or if I should go ahead and register to take it this summer? Is it a biology course, a psych course or..? Any help with that would be great!

2. Also, as far as the required courses go, do you know how long it too long ago for them to count? The earliest one that I took was 2011 (Anatomy and Physiology). Do you think this would still count?

3. Do you have a contact for someone in the department that was especially helpful to you when you have questions about admissions?

Thanks in advance!

Hi aeanderson12-

1. Lifespan Development is a Psychology course and yes, you are correct it would be the same as Developmental Psychology. A course that basically covers the life span of baby through adult.

2. I couldn't find any information regarding the age of courses that would be accepted. Usually it is 10 years so you would be fine; however, I have seen 5 years on a couple of programs so my answer is not really valuable.

3. The name listed on the website under the FAQs is Jan Kavazanjian. I also had emailed with a question and received a fairly prompt response from Karen Allard from the Nursing Department Admissions.

Hope that helps!

I will be starting the program this June (2017), very excited, its been a long 6 months

@aeanderson12 There is no expiration on any courses for this program, its one of the reasons so many people apply.

For anyone interested in this program, I would strongly suggest going to an information session (I've been to two of them).

There's time for questions, and pretty much all of your concerns are addressed.

Hey guys, if you don't mind sharing what type of interview questions you were asked for the ABSN?

@js1776 I got your message but unfortunately I can't reply because I'm not considered an active member. Are you currently in the ABP program? I'm a member of the new class's Facebook page. Can I answer your questions on here or how would you like to get in contact? I'm happy to help if I can.

I received your PM and just responded to it

thank you for creating this thread. So you heard back from them in November. when did the program actually start? also i am graduating in fall 17 which means that my degree will not be ready at the time of application although all the prerequisites have been met. do you think that will be a problem even though my degree will be handed over before the program actually begins?

The program starts in June. In my year there were people who graduated in May 2016 with their first degree and then started the program in June 2016 so that means they applied when they had not finished their degree yet. I am not sure if that has changed though.
