Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone, I'm currently in the Stony Brook accelerated (1 year) program and here to help with questions you might have. It was useful for me to look at the thread from last year when I was applying so I wanted to get one started for all of you. Feel free to post questions or message me. I hope this is helpful.

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some advice. I have an undergrad degree and I am looking to apply to the one year accelerated program. I have to take the pre-req courses and wanted to know if you had any advice. I was thinking of taking them at Suffolk. Also, I understand the accelerated program is highly competitive. Does anyone have any tips on what I should be doing? Thank you!

Specializes in Obstetric Acute/Newborn Nursery.

Hi! I am in the accelerated program right now (just started my second semester). I took ANP I & II and Micro at Suffolk, so Suffolk is fine.

The program is very competitive. My advice would be to keep your grades high (I had straight A's for the science prereqs) and write a competitive essay.

Grades are important but you want to stand out too!

Hey, I just spoke with a representative from Stony Brook, they said they usually send out the decisions by early January. I'm also very anxious too, waiting is the hardest part. Best of luck guys!

Hi,

I am new to this forum. I joined because I'm applying to the accelerated nursing program at Stony Brook and I find myself in doubt based on the feedback that I have heard from others. My cummulative GPA is at 2.8, but my science prerequisites are mostly A and B's except for microbiology which i received a D in. I plan on retaking Micro at QCC for the Spring semester so that I could get into the nursing program starting in the summer. I know my GPA is low, but i have a lot of volunteer experinces in laboratory work, research and other skills related to heelth. Please advise me on what to do. Do I have a chance at getting into the program?. Do you know someone who got in with a low GPA?

This waiting sucks!!!

I just got an email to schedule an interview !! any tips or information on the format of the interview? Is there a writing section or anything? I'm nervous!!

Has anyone else received any news about an interview?

This is an email I received but I really don't know what to make if it. Maybe someone else can, "Your application has been received. We are no longer using SOLAR for document receipt notification due to problems with the system. However, the Admissions Committee will see exactly what you see now when you open your application, and your application is ready for review. While it is true that interviews are being scheduled by email, interviews are being held from now through early January, at which time we expect to be emailing decisions. Thank you."

Does that mean even though some may be getting responses, people will still be getting times fro interviews? So I'm assuming there are another batch of interviews?

for us it was a group interview, you will also have to write and an essay and take a math test. All very doable, might just want to brush up on your fractions before the day of the interview. You got this!

I got an email today with my solar ID not sure what that means is this how they will send info?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew when applications re-open for the accelerated one year program? I have a bachelors in Bioscience already and really want to become a nurse. I am not sure what to do because from what I see on the Stonybrook website it looks like the next program won't open up until summer 2019. Does anyone know if this is true, or does it open up sooner? Also, I am not sure if anyone also has a bachelors and has done the associates in nursing at suffolk community college as well? I was thinking since I have most of the classes completed through my first degree maybe I would only have to take the clinical aspect for suffolk and perhaps this would help me get into the program once applications re-open? Or maybe it would be wiser to just do the traditional two year since I did hear that students in the suffolk program get automatically admitted into it. Another option I was thinking of was maybe going through with the associates, sitting for the licensing exam and then applying to the RN to BSN program at Stonybrook. Is anyone considering any of these options or has done them and can give me any insight into this?

Hi sabpalm05 unfortunately this program happens once a year so yes the next time the application opens is in 2019. Since you already have a bachelors I would recommend sticking with an accelerated BSN program because now a day hospitals want to see a 4 year nursing degree. There are some other schools on long island that offer this program but they are private (hofstra, LIU, pace and some others) if you are looking for a more affordable program check out SUNY down state (deadline is soon) and Binghamton (deadline is nov 15th)
