It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)
Hi!
While I personally asked for insight as to what was on the math exam a few weeks ago, the comments merely relayed what had been told to applicants at the time the interview was set up. I don’t believe this gives anyone an unfair advantage, as the suggestions of what to focus on was readily available to all applicants granted an interview. I am certainly opposed to anything that would offer an unfair advantage to later interviewees, however, I really don’t perceive that to be the case in this particular circumstance. Additionally, I would hope that all applicants granted admission to the program would work together and approach their education with a decided determination to see all of their classmates thrive, rather than taking a cutthroat approach to succeed. Perhaps such a mentality is beneficial and even fostered in the business world, but I would imagine it isn’t widely encouraged in such a team oriented field as nursing.
I’m not trying to ruffle feathers at all, I’m just merely saying part of the allure of this particular program, at least for me, is that it students are surrounded by other helpful, encouraging, and supportive individuals. The desire to foster a sense of community was strongly impressed on those who went to the information sessions and I’m really thrilled to see it’s already taking root in this online community of Stony Brook hopefuls.
A sincere best of luck to all who applied!!
Very well said, NeuroLK. I agree with you completely; everything that has been posted regarding the interviews is information that is readily available to all applicants selected for an interview once they receive the email containing all of the essential information about the interview. On the other hand, I could also understand why people would be upset at other applicants receiving information that could potentially help them with their interview process - if - they were given information that others who had interviewed prior to them did not have the very same information at their disposal (which they did). Also, while nursing is without a doubt a teamwork-based profession, and I have heard from several current Stony Brook students about how well their classes mesh and have become something of a family to one another, the process of getting into the program is cutthroat, no ifs ands or buts about it. This is why some people may feel that it is wrong for others to share tidbits of their interview experience on the forum. However, I have not seen any posts containing specific interview questions, math problems, writing prompts or anything that actually gives an unfair advantage, so I don't really see why it's such an issue. I think it's fair to say that everything posted thus far has been posted with the best of intentions to help ease tensions and calm nerves, just as Neuro said.
Either way, best of luck to everyone!
Hello all,
Just joined this awesome website!!!! I graduated from stony brook and I applied for their 1 year program. I'm really freaking out because some of you already got calls for interviews. Should I be worried/concerned with a 2.97 gpa trying to get in for the last 2 years for their two year program and got denied both times.. Are there any other nursing school recommendation that I might have a fairly good chance of getting in. Thanks!
Hey rindolma7, and welcome! I don't have the stats in front of me, but from the info session I attended in the spring, I believe the average GPA for accepted students for both the 1- and 2-year programs has been around 3.6. Obviously, GPA isn't everything, but it's a really competitive program. If you don't get into SBU, you might want to try one of the private colleges in the area, which tend to be slightly less cutthroat.
I'm currently finish up my undergrad and right now I don't have all of the pre-reqs complete and I'm taking some in the spring. I submitted my application on Oct 7, and just got called for the interview today.
Hey ashleymac, thanks for letting me know I am not the only one. (I am currently an undergrad at UB too)
For others who asked, I submitted my application on Oct. 15th and got an interview on Oct. 29th.

@JA1001, ash6117 and everyone else lol, I posted this a few pages back but I will post it one last time just so that you guys don't have to go back and re-read...a friend of mine is in the 2-year program and is also a member of the SB Pre-Nursing society, so she hears tidbits of news every now and then; this is where I heard that not being invited for an interview does not mean that you haven't been accepted. This is the first year that Stony Brook is conducting interviews, so the process may be a bit hectic for them. However, the more that I think about it, the more that I doubt that there would be any sense to accepting applicants whom the committee hasn't interviewed...it seems unfair and like a waste of time to interview several people and then pull from a pool of applicants who were never interviewed.
