Still looking for my first RN Position

Published

Hello Everyone. I graduated with a BSN Degree last May and have been applying for Nursing Positions since January 2009. I have gone on interviews for both RN and Medical Assistant positions and have heard that because I do not have experience I can not be considered for the positions. I hold NY and NJ Nursing licenses and have devoted my days to applying for positions. The bills are piling up and I am wondering what to do. I lost my job in November of 2009 and thought by now I would have a RN Position. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks!

Are you only applying at hospitals? You might find job opportunities outside the hospital, even though this might not be where you necessarily want to start your nursing career.

Since the bills are now piling up high, it might be time to consider some non-hospital places of employment such as nursing homes, hospices, home health, private duty, doctors' offices, urgent care centers, freestanding dialysis clinics, psychiatric facilities, and group homes for the developmentally disabled. Good luck to you!

Thank you for the well wishes. I have tried hospitals, LTC facilities, doctor's offices and hospices but with no success. I am wondering if agencies can help me but I think you need at least a year of experience before they will consider you.

DON'T GIVE UP!!!! I graduated in May of 2009 as well and did not start my frist job until the beginning of April. I am sure you are applying everywhere, just as I did, and it becomes very disheartening. I cannot tell you how many times I heard from people..."but there is a nursing shortage, you could have a job anywhere!" I eventually found a job by cold calling a very rural hospital and decided moving to a job for a year of experience would be an adventure. Be persistant. Insist on talking to HR. We graduated at a bad time, so you may just have to move where there is something available, if it is possible for you, just like I did! Good luck!!!
