  1. I recently graduated with a Master's Degree in Nursing Informatics. I have been working as a nurse for two years and I have been looking for an informatics job for a few months now. Most employers would like five to seven years of experience. Informatics is a great field and I hope that this will change.
  2. Sorry, I am inquiring about stool specimens...
  3. Hello Everyone- My father has just been diagnosed with Colon Cancer. He was hospitalized in July for COPD and has been getting various tests and referrals to various physicians. The doctors were so focused on his lungs that I made sure that he used the incentive spirometer, took his Spiriva handihaler, ate healthy foods and did at least twenty minutes of walking each day. I am a new grad RN and have been trying my best to nurse him back to health. He smoked two packs a day and was a heavy drinker for 45+ years but has not smoked or had a drop of alcohol since the day he was admitted to the hospital. While he was there, he had an allergic medication to two medications. During the night, a nurse collected a stool specimen which looked like it had been there for hours. I asked the nurse if she was aware that there was a stool specimen that needed to be sent to the lab, the nurse responded yes, it has been there since early this morning and I will send it now. I always thought that specimens had to be sent in a timely manner. We went to the surgeon today and I asked about this topic and his response was it does not matter when the specimen would be sent because it will not show any signs of cancer. Is this true? I always thought you needed to send the specimen within 1-2 hours after collecting it, not 5-6 hours after. How much information could you collect if you left it that long?
  4. I have been looking for a RN position since January 2009. I have been applying on hospital websites, nursing homes, on various career websites- careerbuilder.com and monster.com are just a few and craigslist.com. I hold both a NY and NJ state license and was hoping to find something by now. Is there anything else that I should be trying? I go on interviews and send thank you letters. I try to follow up with a phone call and most of time people are in and out of the office so I have to leave a message. I never hear back. I would appreciate some advice. Thanks!
  5. I am an RN who graduated with a BSN Degree in May 2009. I have been applying for RN Positions since January of 2009. I lost my job in November of 2009 and have been looking for positions ever since. I have been getting interviews but it is usually two a month and then a couple of months without an interview. I have been applying for Medical Assistant positions too in the hope that maybe once the market improves I can make a leap while at least practicing in healthcare. The last position I interviewed for was a Dermatology RN position. The advertisement said that they where willing to train and I was really interested in the position. I interviewed a week after applying and I thought it went well. Before I left the interview they said that they would let me know by the end of the following week. I sent a Thank you letter and waited. By the time Friday came around I was on pins and needles... so I called the office and asked to speak to the interviewer who was out of the office. I left my name and number hoping to get a response. It is now Tuesday and I am beginning to feel like I did not get the position. This is not the first time that I have not heard back from an interview but I am beginning to feel like I am doing something wrong. At the very least, I believe potential employers should let interviewees know their decision one way or another. What should I do next??
  6. I live in the NJ/NYC area and I have a NJ and NY state Nursing License. I have been applying for over a year now and am wondering if it would be better for me to start appearing to hospitals, clinics, etc so they can see I am a person, not just a quota on a computer screen. I appreciate your advice and I hope things turn around soon...
  7. I am still looking for my first RN position and am planning to go into NYC on Monday to apply for positions and put a face to my name. I would appreciate if I could get some help with a few hospitals, clinics or nursing homes that are willing to hire an RN with no experience. Thanks!
  8. Thank you for the well wishes. I have tried hospitals, LTC facilities, doctor's offices and hospices but with no success. I am wondering if agencies can help me but I think you need at least a year of experience before they will consider you.
  9. Hello Everyone. I graduated with a BSN Degree last May and have been applying for Nursing Positions since January 2009. I have gone on interviews for both RN and Medical Assistant positions and have heard that because I do not have experience I can not be considered for the positions. I hold NY and NJ Nursing licenses and have devoted my days to applying for positions. The bills are piling up and I am wondering what to do. I lost my job in November of 2009 and thought by now I would have a RN Position. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks!
