Stethoscopes

Hi All,

I just received a gift from the wonderful doctors I work with at my job... a Littmann Classic II S.E. Stethoscope! When they gave it to me I started to cry because it was such a special and well thought out gift... they know I just got accepted to nursing school. Well, what I wanted to ask you all is this...

My school told me to purchase a sprague stethoscope and/or a cardio stethoscope. So, what should I do? Do I have a better stethoscope (Littmann)? Do I need to get the ones the school recommended I get? This is all so new to me and I have no clue. Please help. Thanks!

Hello...congrats on getting excepted, and lucky you to have such kind friends.

I have to tell you, IMHO a littman classic is 10 times better than sprague, as for a Cardio?? I don't really know what they mean. I have a littman master cardiology it too was a gift, but I find it just as good if not the same as littman classics. If your really going to get into heart sounds, and advance practice...I would then say perhaps invest in a steth that specializes in that. Otherwise, I think yours is great. Good luck

Get your stethoscope engraved before you start clinicals. I had a doctor walk off with mine. Just don't let it out of your site.

I just ordered the stethoscope i wanted the one everyone suggests, Littman classic II SE. i ordered it from Steeles.com, i originally ordered it from allheart but allheart decided that they were moving there warehouse and never told me(or anyone else) and i was waiting for about 10 days before I finally called and they told me. SO i canceled the order and ordered it from steels.com. I'm glad it was cheaper(not by much but still) and i will get it in a few days as opposed to who knows when with allheart.

I got a Littmann Master Cardiology off of ebay for $115 which is a pretty good deal. It was brand new with waranty and accessories. You may check ebay out if your looking for a stethoscope. I would only suggest buying from those with positive feedback and I think I would only buy new. Anyways, it is a good place to start. Just be sure to compare prices with as many places as possible to get a good deal. Don't go too cheap and definitely get it engraved.

Wow, that was a really nice gift and gesture! I would personally buy a mid-range steth for school and then save your nice one for your first day on the job as an RN!..........and engrave it...!!

I just got my Littman classic II SE from steeles.com. I love It, i do not have much to compare it to but it is really nice and you can hear very very good with it. it took only 2 days to get here and was only 68.00 all together(shipping and all).

what would be a good stethoscope to start out with for nursing school.

If you can afford it, Get the Littman Classic II SE. i got mine from steeles.com just the other day and it was the cheapest i could find( Shipping and all 68.99) and it took only 2 days to get here(PA) and thats with regular UPS groud. I know alot of people like allheart but i had a bad experience with them, i would not recommend them. Also if you cannot afford a littman then get a sprague or any cheap stethoscope will d the trick. Alot of people on here will tell you that they did not spend tons of money on a stethoscope for school and did just fine with the cheap one they had.
