States Hiring New Grads

Nurses New Nurse

Hello everyone!

Not sure if I am posting in the right forum- but I'm gonna give this a shot and hope for an influx of replies~

Anyway, I am finishing my 2 year RN degree in AZ and have been looking at different random states to see who IS hiring new grads and I have to admit that I am becoming quite discouraged.

Can anyone offer any advice as to which states/hospitals ARE hiring us newbies?

Thanks for all of the help!

Maybe I'm wrong. I just like to think the best of people. :)

It's nice that you can be that way. I can't keep myself from going by experience, and so far, it has served me well.

i live here in el paso, texas, (not too far from you), and all the hospitals here are looking for rns, new and experienced. in fact, on my unit, (nicu) there were 2 new graduate nurses just hired a few weeks ago, and there are still positions open. whatever you do and wherever you go, good luck!

what hospital do you work at?

I am graduating in May 2010 and am hoping to move to Washington DC with my boyfriend. I would love to work in the ICU but I am sure that is a stretch for a new grad. What department would give me the experience for a future ICU transition. Also how does it look for new grad hiring? Are options open for new grads or is there a hiring freeze? Just curious because I really feel DC is the place for me.

Vermont is hiring new grads. If you don't mind small hospitals (25-50 inpatient beds) and long drives, you should be able to find a job. It helps if you like cold weather and the outdoors.

Really? That's exciting! Do you mind naming names? I haven't looked at hospitals quite that small, maybe that's the problem.... FAHC & DHMC have suspended their new grad programs, and the one at the 100-bed hospital I currently work for (as a secretary), had 40 applicants for 4 positions. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right places... Thanks for any details you can provide...

MS is. 4 new grads are starting on my floor in a few weeks.

A bit concern that there are few US trained nurses having difficulty finding jobs there when there are few if not many overseas nurses recently hired to fill vacancies. Is there something missing from the US nurses that the employer turn to overseas trained nurses as a potential.? i do not see any reason to suggest that nurses from overseas are threat but where is the rationale of recruting from overseas when there are so many already waiting to be hired there? Well, i am not US trained but still unlucky because until now i have not fulfilled my american dream. If i can get there with this retrogression still on, then i will be happy and will finally say, yes i did it just the rest of the fortunate ones. I just hope it will be over soon then, you (US trained job hunters) and overseas trained like me will be over the moon.

Kansas city is hiring. I got a phone call from the recruiter saying that they wanna hire me for the ICU position but I didn't take the job coz it's too far.

My understanding is/was that many smaller hospitals, ie. more rural areas, are where you can still find some jobs "close to home" or in state. Too often we overlook the possibilities in our own back yard, for instance I live in SE VA, I stewed in my semester of school because very few in my class of 60 had secured jobs, I thought I had punched my ticket by doing an externship last summer and staying on as an aid ... not so much. I interview for 4 positions in 3 hospitals, was offered 2 jobs and chose one in the ED. I feel like I jumped at the first offer, I am normally very judicious in these types of decisions, but I was new, scared, and not feeling very warm and fuzzy about my prospects.

Had I broadened my geographical search area, I would've seen there were many more option including: the level 1 trauma center or bigger ICU with formal training plans in the Western part of the state, as well as "good on paper" options in neighboring states.

What hospital if you dont mind me asking?

The hospital in Kansas City's called 'Salina Regional Health Center. Actually, I was intended to apply a hospital in Salina, CA. But I have mistakenly applied to 'Salina Regional Health Center' in Kansas City. After talking to the human resource personnel, I realized that I have applied to the hospital in the wrong city. Anyway, The human resource staff's very nice and he said they are willing to train new grads. They have openings for ICU and step-down ICU.

Thanks for the info. However, this hospital is located in Salina, Kansas. Not Kansas City Kansas or Kansas City Missouri. This hospital is about 2 hours away from both Kansas City's. :lol2:
