My facility recently had State in the building over a self-reportable incident. The nurse that was on duty at the time of the incident happened to be at home the day they came in. She said that "they" tried calling her several times but she didn't answer. I feel that it's not a good thing that State calls you at home. I haven't heard of such a thing until now. What are the implications? Have you had State call you at home? Outcome?
Yes, surveyors will call you at home. CMS requires us to interview all involved. And no, the DNS , Don cannot be the one to call. We are required to get direct interview information.[/quotethe only time i was in this position, the DNS called me told me who wanted to talk to me and handed the phone over to that person. i certainly wouldn't talk to any random person that called me at home. There is no way for me to truly know who they are.
I have received calls at home from State, though I knew beforehand that they would be calling and at what time, so it was not out of the blue. The particular case I am thinking of was an injury of unknown origin and they needed to know what specifically the resident had stated to me regarding it. Nothing came of it- I don't think we ever did determine exactly where the injury came from. It was less than five minutes and wound up being a nonevent.

Calling a staff member at home is very common during a serious investigation. I always try it avoid it if possible and call the individual at work after I get their next work day schedule. CMS really puts pressure on the surveyors to get those interviews.
