Dude, just relax... Study what you have to study, do your assignments, and treat clinicals like a job. That is all you have to do. Ignore the drama, and don't let others anxiety rub onto you. Some people will tell you that they have no life and no free time. Myself and many others I know have PLENTY of free time to not even think about NS.

I agree completely... I have plenty of free time. It's just a matter of being organized. I read stories about people studying 12 hours a day 7 days a week - I would kill myself after a month of that! One day at a time - thats the best way.

Make nursing school a part of your life, not your entire life.....

i am in the same predicament as you, i am starting in august. already, i hear all kinds of scary stuff. don't know what or who to believe anymore. anyway, i'm going in...no going back!

Glad to read these posts. I start an accelerated program in September and don't want to give up every aspect of my life to complete it.

Helpful hints:

1. Have a LONG talk w/your girl/boy friend about your schedule. Allow them to help you and it will make them understand why you can't go to the bar some weekends.

2. Get used to a calendar and using it. Plan your semester, papers, deadlines, projects ahead for the three months to avoid surprises. You will find some weeks you'll be pulled by all your classes if you don't prepare accordingly.

3. Get an iPhone/Touch, Palm, or WinPDA. I know, some will laugh at this, but you'll be surprised how helpful having Drugs, Texts, dictionary/theo is when you are already reading a large book and trying to stay awake coming across foreign words/concepts and can look them up by using your PDA.

4. Get a RN mentor, someone you can ask silly questions or for advice and feel comfortable around.

5. Listen to the guys above, avoid the drama...You'll see what we mean in a few weeks

6. Workout, run, take time for play in that schedule of yours. Its not all bad, and some of the horror stories are r/t financial, family and social issues that you may not have.

7. Get a good pair of shoes, comfortable scrubs and a littman stethescope. Also, might want to consider getting a NCLEX study guide. Sometimes these help with tests while in school.

Best of luck, you'll be fine. Most guys fly thru school.

Wow, lots of great advice for those of us who may be a bit nervous.

Hi, my name is Brent and I'm a 20 year old nursing student who will actually start Orientation to the ADN tomorrow morning and Wed from 9 am - 4 pm.

I'm a little worried about starting this semester. Of course I know this won't be a walk in the park, but those nerves are rumbling.

Anyways, I just have to go in with a positive attitude that everything will be okay.

I am starting this fall. I read all the horror stories on here. Yes I am sure it all requiers a lot of selfstudy and focus. But my mom became an RN while she raised 2 sons (not the best on the behavior side of things) at the same time. I am 35ish now and decided to make a career change from contracting to medicine. I was a paramedic for 8 years before contracting and miss a lot about it. The feeling of "I did something good today." has been missing. So no matter the sacrafice I CAN DO THIS AND WILL DO THIS. All All classes are complete with good grades except my core nursing classes and 'human growth and development' and a humanity. So my couseload wont be as bad as some. A&P 1 and 2 were tough. I belive that if you set your mind to it you can do anything. This will be a piece of cake.(Just maybe an old piece of cake that got hard on ya, but you can swallow it!!!!)

I too am starting my classes this month. I have been out of school for 13 years. What is getting me worried the most if just not remembering how to be a student, how to study the right things. I dont really care that im 1 of 4 men in my class or that im 1 of 3 white people in the class either. I was in the Army for 12 years I dont see color or working with woman as a issue. I had schooling in the Army to advance in rank and was always finished with honors, but that was the Army. I know that I am not stupid, but I also know I am not the smartest cookie in the box. I just know that I will have to work harder and longer then most. I hope that my background and my will not to quit will push me thru the rought times ahead. I salute you all for taking this step and looking past the BS that men get for chosing Nursing as thier path in life. Good luck to you all.
