I'm starting school this fall, planning on going into the nursing program, and what I'm wondering is this. I have always struggled with math and science, so am I crazy to go into nursing? I've wanted to be a nurse since I was little, I'm 30 now and I'm finally going to do it but frankly I'm scared to death! What do you think? Thanks!

I'm starting school this fall too...I'm going to be 39 next month...a bit nervous myself, but I'm quite certain that if you got into the program, you must've done well enough in your math and sciences for them to consider you. Have you taken A&P I and II yet? and Micro?
Good luck to you...I'm sure if you have good study habits and use all your available resources...you'll do just fine. Congratulations!!!
I'm just starting my prerequisites this fall and will be applying to the nursing program, so I haven't gotten in yet....haven't taken anything yet lol.
ah...gotcha... I misunderstood. Well, I guess this is a good time to find out how you'll do...but definately utilize the resources at school and good luck!
Thanks, It's good to know I'm not the only one doing this!

OK, I'm 43 and it's taken me a year and half to finish my pre-reqs. I wasn't that good in science in school but alot has happened to me since I graduated HS. I'm changing careers (Complete turn around). You are NOT the only one, the majority of people accepted into our program are 35 and over. My suggestion to you is study your notes a little everyday, so it will stay in your memory. I did fine and I'm sure you will too.

I started on prereqs when I was around 35-36. It is such a different experience as an adult. I was never brilliant in math and sciences in high school, but as an adult I have different study habits and am more committed to doing well. It took me several years of night school to knock out those prereqs, but I did manage it and to my surprise I was able to get A's. I just finished my first year of nursing school. I absolutely love it!! Don't let your past performance hinder you from getting out there and doing it. You will surprise yourself with what you can accomplish if you want it bad enough. In nursing school the only math is basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, ratios, conversions, and percents. So you can really do everything with a basic knowledge of Algebra. I am 40 now and though I wish I was younger, I am glad that I took the time to methodically push through those prereqs which gave me the confidence that I could get into nursing school. Don't try to rush through and overwhelm yourself. I took basic Algebra, and then Algebra II, before I took Chemistry.
You can do it.

Is this your first time back in college since after high school? If so we have something in common. When I started school last fall I was scared to death of Chemistry and Algebra. Both classes I seriously struggle with when I was young. As an adult I understood Chemistry, I got a C, but I got the subject like never before. I finished Algebra with an easy 98 and loved the course. I think as adults we are much more interested and responsible in our subjects!
No offense to the younger people of course:p

Ditto to this. I did better in A&P1&2 and Micro than I did in any of my classes for my BA...(well maybe except for Intro. to Psych. )
I've also only taken one class at a time while pushing through prereqs..it really is so much nicer because you can buckle down and concentrate on one thing.
Don't be discouraged, where there's a will, there's a way! You can do it! Good luck!

Kassi....its like you took the words right out my mouth! I am 27 and not yet in school to begin my pre-reqs but highly considering it! I feel the exact same way...never to great at math/science(c's usually) so am I completely insane for considering nursing!!??!! However I like to think I am more focoused and determined now than i was in my earlier years(friends and social life was much more important than school!!) and want to believe that I can do whatever I put my mind. But then Im thinking....who am I kidding this is going to be hard as ****!!!
So I guess its just a chance we have to take....its comforting to know Im not they only ones with these thoughts though!!
Best of Luck!!=)
