starting salaries

U.S.A. Minnesota

I'm out of state in nursing school right now but want to move back home to MN after I get my degree in december. Just wondering if anyone can give me an idea of how much new RNs can hope to make in the Minneapolis and surrounding areas. Thanks!

Because of negotiations by the union, starting wages for a new grad RN is $27.27 - before shift differentials.

Shift differentials include the differentials for working evening, night, weekend shifts and also picking up a weekend shift that you are scheduled to have off (an extra $100 per shift!)

Working overtime can also give you an extra income boost too.

sorry, i don't know much about unions, are you saying that because of the union, ALL of the mpls area hospitals start at $27.27?

and yes, i agree that where you get paid the most is not necessarily the best place to work, just trying to get an idea of MN pay since I want to move back there anyways.

thanks for all the help and replies!

The hospital I just started at is union. Starting pay for a new nurse is $24.18 an hour, with evening/night diff. of $1.25, and nights diff. $1.50. There are also bonuses for comming in on days/weekends off.

I don't know if ALL the mpls area hospital start at that rate. I just know that the hospital I work at is part of the union and that is the starting rate for nurses. But, I guess not all union hospitals start at that rate if another nurse here is starting at a different rate at a union hospital :)

Oh, and night differential for us is $4/ hour.

The base pay will vary if you are Associates Degree or BSN as well. The Associates base I've been quote has usually been around $26 with new grad residency cohorts.

Base won't necessarily vary much with degrees. Our BSN nurses only make an extra $0.50 an hour.

I was just talking with a nurse at ANW. She quoted me 27/hr plus 4$/hr for nocs plus an additional 1$/hr for weekends.

For a bachelors level nurse....
