Starting pre rec. and allready having a hard time

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am in Bio 111 as a pre rec for A&P and the teacher is horrible. I have never thought of my self as a science person but really enjoy pt care. I have worked in EMS for about 6 years now and I am wanting to go into nurseing. I am getting through the class but I am questioning whether I will be able to pull an A. Am I doomed? From my intern shifts in the ED it seems there is so much more to nuresing than the covalent bonds of hydrocarbons. Thanks for the advise and the vent.

Yes, this is true. But this is a intro Biology course (im assuming), so the foundations are being introduced. I too had difficulty with this sort of information, but in order to succeed in your future nursing education (primarily pathophysiology), you need an understanding of the "basics" Does your text have a supplemental CD? Maybe your school offers additional tutoring, aside from your instructor. You need to take advantage of all help that is made available for you. And most importantly, don't let not getting an "A" in this course discourage you from your nursing goals. Good luck to you.

Unfortunately the chemistry is very important to understand many physiological processes. You'll be grateful to this class once you get into muscle physiology. :)

At my school Biology comes after AP1 but before AP2. I found it easier to understand that way because a lot of what I learned in AP applied to biology. I know it sounds funny but those 'for dummies' books really help. I used it before my AP class to help understand the basics. I would see if you could find one of those books to help supplement the teachers lectures. Also don't be afraid to talk to your teacher if you don't understand, but do it after class. Most teachers want their students to excel and if your not understanding the material it gives them the chance to try to teach it from a different perspective.

I actualy purchased the 'for dummies' biology book on Amazon and am reading it before I start the class. It is great! Even though you are already in the class a nice, basic, laymans terms break down may be beneficial for you.

There are many supplements out there that could help you understand the topic better. You can go to Borders or Barnes and Noble to check the books out. They are probably under Nursing Books. I wish someone had told me to do that when I took my Biology, A&P, and Microbiology. Good luck to you!
