Starting Ed Soon

Most important piece of advice I can give: ask questions, ask questions, ask questions! Do not be afraid to ask questions. Learn from the more experienced nurses and do not, as some here have shown recently, think us jaded and burnt out because we are cynical or have a wicked sense of humor. Don't be afraid to open your heart and cry, and above all, ASK QUESTIONS!!

As TazziRN said ASK QUESTIONS! As a grad and a new ED nurse I can't tell you how many questions I ask on a daily basis. Like today, I asked many questions because I was unfamiliar with something or didn't know how to approach the doc family orders etc. The charge nurse actually thanked me at the end of the shift for asking all those questions. She said she felt better because she said I was less likely to make mistakes if I ask and she doesn't have as much to worry about with my questions as opposed to some one in my shoes who asks no questions. Also a real life saver for me was learning my protocols, often times I could get stuff started for my pt instead of waiting for the doc, or better yet having the test results back when the doc wants to see the pt too! I agree that asking questions is the single most important thing to remember. Also remember that if someone makes you feel stupid for asking a question, they're the stupid one.

I am in the same boat as you, which hospital are u at? I am interviewing for an ER job as a new grad also, I think I am going to get it. I have 5 yrs experience as an EMT, I took an ACLS class last week so that helped me get in. My hosptial is going to send me for tnccp and enpc training which Im excited about. and they offer a 6 month preceptorship. Love to keep in touch and see how its going/!!!
