Start RN-BSN right away?

Nurses New Nurse

For those of you in your first year of nursing that earned an associate's degree; did you go back to school right away for your RN-BSN? Do you have any plans on doing this now or in the future? Do you think that it's a good idea to start back to school, while working, or would you suggest just focusing on the job versus tackling more school right now? I'm a little torn. I need a job and income first. However, once I have started my job, I am toying with the idea of going right back to school for my RN-BSN, which I think is important but I also want to concentrate on being the best RN that I can. What did you do and would you make the same decision? TIA.

Specializes in ICU.

I graduate May 2012. I really was (and still am, actually) torn about whether to pursue the BSN right away or wait. I have applied to a few RN-to-BSN programs just in case I decide to go right away. If I get accepted into my first choice program (the cheapest option, the most convenient option - as I graduated from this institute previously for another degree) I will probably start right away Fall 2012.

I think that things might be different if I had a job lined up. But, job prospectives are bleak around here. So what else can I do? I will continue to apply to jobs and complete the degree in one year (Heh, what is one more year of student loan debt?)

I am hoping the bachelors degree will open up more opportunities to me. There are some particular facilities that I would like to work that require a BSN.

If I do not get into this program, I'd prefer to find some sort of medical related job before starting up the program. I am not one to put my eggs in one basket, but I can not afford to go to another school right away (it would financially cost me more and would probably require me to take more classes than what would be needed from me at this particular school.)

Some people choose to go right away (or else they would never go back.) If you feel like you are in this boat, you might consider starting right away. I love school, I could go back at any time. That's probably another reason I want to go right away. Lol!

This is a big decision for me too...I signed a contract at my current employer stating that I would have my BSN within five years. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Except that I already have a non-nursing Bachelors and plan on getting a master's degree, and there are a few bridge to MSN programs around me. So I plan to work for 12-18 months, figure out what kind of master's program I want, and go from there.

Specializes in Acute Care Pediatrics.

I graduated in December, and start back to school in May for my BSN. I have goals. :D
