Stanford New Grad 2011 Residency

Published

I graduated with a BSN in April 2010, got my RN in June, and am still patiently job-hunting (no interviews yet.) I got an email from my nursing school last week that said "Attention 2009 and 2010 grads! Stanford will start accepting applications for their March 2011 New Grad Residency soon."

I went to the Stanford residency application web page, and saw this as the first qualification:

"Must be a graduate from a BSN or master's level entry into practice program, accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), within 9 months prior to the Program's start date."

Maybe this is a really silly question, so I want to ask it here before I ask it of Stanford. If the program starts in March, then I didn't graduate within 9 months prior to the program start date. Are they really excluding all Spring 2010 grads or am I reading this wrong?

Thanks for any suggestions/clarification!

did anyone get asked back for the second round of interviews??

I found out Thursday I got one for Critical care and one for the Infusion center. I can hardly believe it, I keep thinking I must be dreaming. One more step to go though! This would be a dream come true.

Any job offers yet?

Still anxiously waiting, the anticipation is killing me! I finished my final interviews last week and yesterday, so now I just wait and think and wait and think. I know the NMs on the units I interviewed in have made their decisions, but not sure if I am waiting for HR to get lists of all the selected candidates or if the NM will just call us personally. I called HR today to ask how the process works, but unfortunately the person there today does not know about the program. Does anyone know how the process works? Hopefully only good news to come. :)

Any job offers yet?

I was offered the position in the infusion center and I am sooooo excited! Hands down the best news I have ever received. I can't wait to begin my journey at Stanford!! :redbeathe

Congrats! I was also offered a position in critical care :) Just waiting for my background check to go through and then it's official! I'm still in shock that they chose me. They told me that 10 new grads total were chosen and we'll be starting at the end of March. Yay!!!

Congrats! Guess we will be meeting soon! I can't wait!

Congrats to you all.... I applied as well. I thought I did really well on the phone interview (least i thought) but they didnt select me for the next round. I have a 3.7 gpa, BSN, a year of nurse tech experience but still didnt get selected.

Mind I ask what qualifications you posses to be selected for an interview?

It was really competitive this past application period - over 1000 applicants for 10 spots! I graduated with my BSN, GPA 3.9, and over four years of acute care CNA experience. My letters of reference were strong and I also have ACLS, PALS, and an EKG cert. Every little thing seems to count! Also, just FYI - they do take the initial phone interviews pretty seriously: when I had one of my final interviews with a unit manager, she had my answers to the three questions printed out and referenced them more than once!

Good luck and try to stay optimistic :)

Hi Basid786,

Don't give up hope. Anything you can do to better your resume certainly will help, and wow ICUnurse2011's qualifications are very impressive. Mine are very different though. I have a 3.44 GPA, BSN, I have my CNA and EMT certifications but have never been a paid CNA or EMT. I have no additional certifications and I do not have any connections with any Stanford employees. When I applied for the program I had not even graduated and I did not get my RN license until only days ago.

Though what I do have is very strong letters of recommendation and unique volunteering experiences. I also used my resume to display my evidence-based research. I prepared for days for each interview, including the phone interview. I did extensive research on Stanford and demonstrated my desire to be a part of their team and continue learning lifelong. With my extensive interview preparation I was able to walk into the interview composed relaxed, well as relaxed as one possibly could be walking into your dream job interview haha. I was myself and let my personality show and I am blessed that they chose me.

Good luck and best wishes in your future job search! :redbeathe

This is awesome, congratulations to everyone selected (I didn't apply to Stanford). Thanks for mentioning your qualifications, I'm relieved to see that we don't all have to have 4.0 GPA's and every certification under the sun. You have a lot to offer in place of that! Congratulations again! :D

All in all I think it is most important to find what makes you proud to be you. Whatever your accomplishments may be make the most of them!
