Staff Nurses

Specialties CRNA

Published

Now that I have completed my BSN, and all the other course work to start the CRNA program, I'm having second thoughts. The concern I have is letting the staff nurses care for my patients. Their level of knowledge is, in most cases low. As a staff nurse, I did many inservices. It seems like retention is a problem for many nurses, not all, but many. Laziness is another problem. It seems that the nurses find it more important to sit in the lounge, than care for the patients. It also seems that most, not all, of the nursing staff don't have to listen to management. These nurses know that they won't be fired due to the shortage of nurses.

I'm concerned about my patients. In the future, if I go the MSN route, I will have to turn my patients over to "third world care".

Have any of you all thought about this, how do you see it?

The hospital I just left, not on my preference had a ration of 1/10 for an RN with covering another 5 for the LPN. I was not sitting LOL. I am sure some do at times though.

NOthing wrong with pride that is right.

Susan,

Ouch! I am surprised that your BSN program did not instill in you the value of RN's at all levels to patient care, and respect for the care that is provided by staff nurses. Someone told you to go into management, please don't, your staff nurses would leave in droves! C'mon, get off the high horse. I, too, am working hard to finish my BSN and I am grateful for the additional nursing knowledge I've obtained from the professional practice, ethics courses, even nursing history courses, however, I don't perceive myself above the staff nurses I have worked with for the past 10 years. I would trust them with my life and the lives of my family members. Some staff nurses without BSN's have phenominal clinical expertise and take pride in the patient care they provide.

It was disappointing to read your post. When I complete my BSN, I intend to apply for the position of nurse manager in the busy ER where I've been practicing with some of the best diploma/associates nurses I have ever met. They are my colleagues and together we can improve the care for OUR patients!

Well, it is pleasant to know that my last 80 hours plus whatever overtime I've lost track of in the last 11 days running in circles providing care and teaching for my patients and their ridiculous families was for not. What the heck was I doing that for when I should of been having fun sitting around on my butt letting my 8 patients call lights bleep and bleep at the desk. I must be an idiot. :eek

I agree this is the dumbest subject I've ever scene on the internet. I would certainly hope you don't go in to any medical profession or legal profession. You simply lack the integrity, compassion, and sense required for either at this point in your life. I suggest an adminitrative direction where you can debate and voice your ridiculous asinine ideas, project on others to follow in a enviroment that won't allow others to question your authority because you have some lengthy important sounding title. I'm sure there are hundres of places that available for you---just check out our government and corporate messes. Those leaders sound much like you.:roll:roll

Lisa--aka just another RN, daughter of an attorney (yeah one of the rare honest ones) and mother of 5 who teaches all her patients and children to question ideas from people such as yourself:D

You are a moron. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that you have trouble tying your shoes in the morning.

Get your head out of your ass and pick another career.

It's funny how this thread seems like a united front, but the rest of the wedsite discussions do not, except for a few. I never said anything about a BSN nurse being better than a ADN/diploma. After all my arrogant self was a diploma nurse for many years. As far as management goes, the hospital can't keep good managers, the STAFF NURSES run them off. as an advanced practice nurse I do not want to leave my patients in the care of - no care at all.

The original post was inflammatory and insulting, and we have all lost something having read it.

Please do not feed the trolls. This thread is now closed.

I found this one a bit late.

Tactfull discussion is always welcomed, but name calling is not. While this discussion was spirited, it had the potential to spiral out of control.
