please help! I have accepted a New Grad RN job in Oxnard @ St. john's Regional medical center. I plan to relocate from LA to Oxnaard, can anyone give me a heads up about St. john's regional Medical center? Is it a smart move?

Thousand Oaks/ Newbury Park are what we say "above the grade" which is a hill that takes you up higher past the flatter field towns such as Camarillo,Oxnard, and Ventura.
The proper name for this hill is the Conejo Grade.

Yes. Locals call it the camarillo grade, the grade, or the conejo grade. The point is that camarillo and oxnard are below it on flatter lands, and thousand oaks/ Newbury Park above it.

Specializes in NICU, High-Risk L&D, IBCLC.

I've known several people who have lived on Silverstrand and they loved it. I would not live along the Port Hueneme beaches - have heard of people getting mugged and beaten up while walking along the beach. The beaches along Ventura would be good as well, maybe a little pricier. I'm not sure of your living situation, but many homeowners along the beaches rent out small studios/1 bedrooms from their homes. Rents would be a bit cheaper and usually all utilities are included.

Specializes in CVA, Telemetry, Med/Surg.

Re: St. John's Regional

I grew up in Oxnard and worked at Ojai Valley Community Hospital before moving on to Northridge Hospital. I've been a nurse for 6 years and have commuted to Northridge for 4.5 years from Camarillo. I am glad for the experience of working at a Level II Trauma Center. Now I am on my way back to Oxnard at SJRMC and will work in a cardiovascular or DOU. All my experiences have been positive and a gsw is the same no matter where you work. I love Ventura county and will always live here. Oxnard ain't so bad. :nuke:

I lived in Camarillo for just under 10 years, worked at St. John's/Oxnard for most of that time.

You couldn't pay me to go back. Left there 6 years ago just after they had gone through the ugly process of unionizing. I had never been pro-union prior to that, but the way the management treated the staff there, I felt it was justified. Never thought I would say/think that! I never felt unsafe working there, tho there are some active hispanic gangs in the area. Wouldn't shop at the WalMart across the street, tho, for that reason. My big beef was how unpleasant the management was - very adversarial towards employees, an us-vs-them approach. Having worked with some management teams elsewhere that where not that way, it was a big turnoff.

The beach communities in general seemed to be so gray and foggy most of the time. You can be just a few miles inland and it is sunny and warm, more to my personal liking. But everyone is different as to what they like.

I know I'm late to this thread, but for future reference: Camarillo also has a nice little community hospital. They send any heavier duty stuff to their parent hospital (St. John's in Oxnard, of all things). But if you prefer something a little smaller, that might be worth considering. The staff there were nice, and as I recall, things weren't so 'ugly' there during the whole unionizing 'thang'. Overall I liked living in Camarillo and we would consider moving back there (depending on DH's job prospects).

Good luck!

Hi,

Do you have any info on St. John's OR's? I am an experienced surgical tech looking to change hospitals. They are currently advertising a job opening for surgical techs. Do you know how many room's they run, the types of cases they do, etc?

Thanks.

Hmm. It's been a few years, so I am rusty on how many OR rooms - 2 open heart rooms, not remembering how many others. They do (did 6 years ago) open hearts, neuro, vascular, general surgery, the full gamet (sp). You will have plenty of work in the OR to be sure.

Good luck!
