oh my goodness, i am not sure what i got myself into by taking this shortened summer anatomy course. i need it to be eligible for the adn program beginning 6/2007 and they make their first round picks in october. i took it hoping i could find out early if i am chosen but wow, what alot of memorization in a short amount of time. on top of that, the instructor kept saying how hard this class is and he could not believe that people would take this in the summer. he went on and on! i just got home and have a ton to learn by tomorrow at 1 pm. i am wondering if this is doable or not.
in addition to the web anatomy site from the univeristy of minnesota that was listed on an earlier post, bookmark this site because you will find it helpful when you move on to the muscles.
http://www.rad.washington.edu/atlas2/ - nicely presented drawings of the muscles of the upper and lower extremities. select a muscle to view a beautiful drawing of it's location, and a listing of it's origin, insertion, action, innervation and arterial supply.
I got accepted into the LVN program and it starts in August. They started this new thing where you have to take A & P I in a summer session and pass it with a 75 to continue into the program. Everyone in my class has already had A & P I and II. They think it is easy but this class is very hard to me. My average grade right now is a 73. I have 9 more tests though to bring it up. All I am doing is studying!! Does anyone have any suggestions or is there anyone in the same position.
make flashcards to memorize the bone and muscle information. utilize the websites to help cement information into your brain. the more times you pick up and read about each subject, the more of it you will retain. just don't do 8 and 12 hours marathons of study without taking breaks or switching the topics periodically. also, check your textbook for a publisher's website that you can access for extra online help. many of the current textbooks have them and the cost of the textbook helps support these sites. there are usually flashcards and quizzes on these websites. read through the front pages of your textbook and look for a website for an online student support website and get whatever passwords you need to get into it from your instructor. if your instructor doesn't have them, ask the people at the bookstore where you bought the textbook. the sales person who sells the textbooks to the bookstore will know how to get those passwords. go through the previous threads on the student forums here for anatomy web links--there are so many of them. if you are on a particular subject and are in need of information or kind of stuck about something--post a thread asking for anatomy help and someone will get you an answer. i normally check the student forums for new threads every day and i particularly look for new threads or posts with questions about nursing, anatomy, math and chemistry. i have loads of weblinks on these subjects. i also have the time to do a specific search within the links i have and get the information back out onto the forums within a few hours and i am happy to do that for any of you.i got accepted into the lvn program and it starts in august. they started this new thing where you have to take a & p i in a summer session and pass it with a 75 to continue into the program. everyone in my class has already had a & p i and ii. they think it is easy but this class is very hard to me. my average grade right now is a 73. i have 9 more tests though to bring it up. all i am doing is studying!! does anyone have any suggestions or is there anyone in the same position.

I would not take Anatomy during the summer because it is such an important class for nursing and 6 weeks, just too short to memorize 14 chapters. I prefer to go slower pace for anatomy, so that I can have time to really comprehend the material. Theresa, since you already started the class, just know you wont have a life for the next 5 weeks. Good luck to you. I hope you do well.
Thanks, FutureNurse35. I agree that one should probably not take this in the summer for the reasons you mentioned and because I really do not have a life at the moment. Just last night, relatives were here from TN for a BBQ, fishing and swimming. I HAD to leave to come home and study for two quizzes I have today on the skull, thoracic and vertabral bones. Luckily, they totally understood as one is a Nurse Anesthist (sp) and the other is a RN. We are also boaters so summer is usually busy running around having fun. So far, I just take my books everywhere like another poster suggested. I worked at a school district so I am off for the summer which makes this easier to handle than if I had a job outside of the home. I give high credit to those who do this with little ones. I remember studying late into the night when my kids were little so that I could get that accounting degree.
Ugh, I am having the exact opposite experience in the shortened A&P course. I'm bombing it TERRIBLY. I don't know if it's me, since I"m working full time and have very limited study time, or the sheer VOLUME of what I am expected to memorize, or the teacher (who is really not all that hot) or some combination thereof, but I simply can not pass this class. It's layed out in such a way that we have two tests a week, both on thursday, one on lecture, one on lab.If I had had any inkling on what the class was going to be like, I would have simply waited until the fall and taken it during the regular semester.
This is NOT TO SAY you can't do it! Lots of people in the class are toughing it out and doing just fine. Sadly, I don't seem to be one of them, which is discouraging.
I am sorry to hear you not doing well in Anatomy.
A&P is one of those classes, that you must study everyday. If you do not have time, it makes it harder to pass. What you can do, use internet resources, tape the lecture, listen on your break, while you driving, rewrite your notes within 48 hours after class. If you do not understand an area, do not be afraid to ask or go for help. You have to take a very aggressive approach inorder to pass Anatomy. You have to also develop a passion for the class knowing how important it is in nursing. Be curious to learn. Good luck to you. I know you can do it, dont give up, hang in there.
I am in CT also, if you want help, send me an email.
The most important thing to remember: the course has a beginning and an end. One day at a time and one test at a time.
I had to remind myself often that I was not studying to be a doctor, so I had to let go of my need to understand everything. I learned this was not realistic and I just needed to know what the professor and syllabus required me to know.
You can do it!

I took A&P I in the 6 week version and I just finished A&P II in the 12 week version.
My suggestions would be to accept that your brain needs to be totally engaged in this for every free minute that you can make available. There is a lot of material and you have to give at least 2 hours a day to get a passing grade. If you want to get an A, you will need to make it a full-time job. For the last four weeks of the A&P I semester, I had a test every day. It was extremely stressful. It is doable but unbelievably demanding.
Having just finished A&P II this week, I can say I am extremely grateful this is behind me.
If you can afford it, buy the Anatomy Revealed CDs (you would only need two for this semester). Not only will you get reinforced learning, but you will get an indepth ability to practice for the practicals.
Good luck.
