srelocation to upstate NY

Published

Hi New York nurses!

My husband and I are planning to relocate to upstate New York. He is originally from Schenectady but I understand that's not the best area anymore. He is a chef and I think a job would be harder for him to come by than me.

We were wondering if anyone could shed some light on cost of living, property taxes, and salary. I am hoping to go into ER nursing. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Debbie

Plus, they're in a NYC ER living in NYC paying a fortune in housing and, well, everything.

I so don't miss the city. Except for ethnic food.

:)

I miss more then the food, like Broadway.

Never was much of a theater person.

But then, I get down pretty frequently. Drive to Albany, pick up the train, get off midtown. It's a long day trip, but do-able since I don't have 10 hours of driving.

And I come back with huge shopping bags of food.

...hope your search turns up good for you and dh.

...I am homesick for Sch'dy. I am a 1971 grad of Mt. Pleasant High School and currently live in Michigan (since 1978), became an RN in 2002. would love to hear from anyone who is familiar with the former MPHS.

I too am looking at a move to UpState NY, but to the area around DeKalb Junction? Anyone know what it is like to find a nursing job in that area? I am a LPN, not an RN. I currently live in TN and am working the Med-Surg floor, nights. I am making between $12 to $15 an hour here, and wonder how that can compare. The little farm I have found is a bunch less money than anything I can find in this area?

I really want to move to a rural area as it is wall to wall subdivsions here and strip malls. Arghhhhh!

Old Broad New Nurse, that's a little lower than the money up here. I don't know DeKalb Junction.

Did you know Mr. Terry? He was a neighbor and friend of ours. His youngest daughter use to babysit my daughter for me.

Oh goody! More leverage with my husband who fears the *snow*! Maybe I can allow him to be a house husband and just care for our horses if we move to the North Country?

Now, as far as I know, Dekalb Junction is in St. Lawrence County and is in the Governeur area? I may have spelled that wrong?

I have actually been a Nurse for 2 1/2 years now....so maybe I should change my Name on this board? I am still an *old broad*...in fact two years or so older than when I signed up on here. [and blond, duh] I am 55 and Nursing is a later on in life career for me. I sure wish I had done this sooner....but back to the point...I had hoped to be able to move to a rural area and still find a job, which is one reason I went back to school and did this, ya know?

Scotia is a town right next to Schenectady. Much better in terms of safety and is actually a decent place to live. I bet Ellis Hospital has ER openings.

I would avoid the public schools if possible (if you have children)- However, the Scotia-Glenville school system is good.

...yeah, he was my chemistry teacher, nice guy but lousy teacher. He would put stuff on the board, start explaining it, then say, wait, that's not right, oh well, it's in the book, read the book!! I passed but barely :) He also went to my church.

When I use to go back to visit my daughter, in Tennessee, I would bring a couple of boxes of them for my daughter, along with Ma Browns Baked Beans. He was a nice neighbor. My daughter went to St Lukes and we moved down here before she went to high school. Last time I saw him was in 2002. He moved in with his youngest, in Cape May. She is an RN and graduate of Plattsburg. I graduated from HVCC, 1971. And Long Island University, Brooklyn Center in 1973, 1976. Believe it or not, I truly miss upstate. The change of seasons and the central location of the area. One to three hours drive from Boston, Montreal, NYC. All of which I use to visit on a regular bases. Now I have to drive six hours just to get out of the state.:uhoh21:

...yeah, it is a pretty part of the country. AND we've had Freihofer cookies sent to all 7 states we've lived in. I went to St. Luke's elementary school and Notre Dame for 9th grade...then to MP. My original plan was to go to HVCC for dental hygienist after high school, but went into the ARMY instead as a medical corpsman.
