Spring '05 grads-1 year in-how many new nurses you started w/ are still there?

Nurses New Nurse

Published

So we've been at it for nearly a year now. HOw many of the new nurses you started with at your first out of school job are still there after a year? Are YOU still in the first job you started out with?

I started in May of '05. We had 10 new grads start then. Of those, 3 have left.

(Though, I know several people I graduated with who switched jobs within hte first year. )

i am still there. (can't say I haven't htought about leaving though, but I'd like to be a little more proficient in my current field before finding another!)

I think there were 10 or 11 new grads that started on my unit last year, I can't remember... and only one of them has left, pretty early in orientation- already had a social work degree and decided she'd rather keep on doing that, than the nursing. we have a pretty supportive environment for new nurses seems like.

and no, I can't believe it's almost been a year. WOW.

Specializes in Telemetry, Stepdown.

I work in another town so I haven't been in touch with any of my classmates in awhile. However, I've heard of a few people switching jobs already. I have been on my job for the entire time, 8 months.

Hi,

Since I don't start until 5/1, I can only go by what I was told during the interview. I will be getting request for authorization for different medical services (surgery, o/p services, dx testing). I have to determine if the service meets medical necessity, including if it's a covered benefit & I will either deny or approve the request. If I require more info, I will call the requester (not the patient) for additional medical information. The pay is in the low 60s. To get them to call me back, I spent 2 weeks sending my resume. I know that I didn't have the clinical experience required, which is at least 3 years. But I wanted to be given the chance to at least interview. I personally feel that as long as you have the ability to learn, the amount of clinical time shouldn't matter. At least I hope not, we'll see.

Good luck!

Hi,

Your post reply caught my attention about switching to a non bedside nursing...working for an insuance company. I too graduated in May 05 and I've been working in a med-surg tele unit for almost a year...but I am more interested in possibly working for an insruance company. See prior to nursing shool I was doing billing (claims) for a medical office and I must say I really enjoyed doing it ( because I had no direct patient contant, mostly contact was on the phone). So what do you do as a UR nurse? How did you get the job and how well do they pay? I'm really curious and interested.

Specializes in OB/Gyn, Post Partum, Antepartum.

I graduated last May. I went to work on an OB Antepartum floor. I really enjoy working with the patients. There were only 2 new grads on my floor. We are both still there. I enjoy it, but I have my limit on how long I want to work there. I am going back to school to get my BSN this fall, thinking about bridging to the MSN as well. But, thus far I am happy where I am.

There were six of us that started within a couple of months of each other....of those 2 are still there full time (not including me---I went PRN). One girl left during orientation (and wants to change to teaching), I left (and took one with me) to do Pre/Post op and OR circulating at an outpatient surgery center...(LOVE IT...pay is WAYYYYY better, great hours 6:15-4:15 Mone-THur, no nights, weekends, or holidays), one other left to go to another outpatient surgery center as well....so that leaves two.

Hello,

Just curious, how much experience is usually required to get a job at an outpatient surgery center? I just graduated in December and work on a med/surg unit. I'm getting some great experience there, but working at a surgery center is something I may like to try in the future.

Good luck to you!

I graduated in May '05 too. There were 4 of us brand new nurses when I started in July 2005 & all 4 of us are still there. My med/surg/tele unit is not a bad place to work. Nearly everyone is very supportive & I really do like it. I probably will stay at my job here until I graduate from NP school (in 2008 or 2009). If I feel like I'm bored or stop learning, then I may think about switching positions to another unit. Although I have to say that the ER does fascinate me. I used to work there sometimes as a nursing assistant during nursing school. But for now I'm staying in med/surg/tele.

I started ortho/neuro/medsurg with 2 other new grads, one has not passed the board a year later. We are all still there, however tomorrow is actually my last day, got a sicu job in a great hospital, hope I love it there!

Specializes in LTC, Other.

I graduated in May 05 and I took a job working with civilly committed sex offenders. I am still there I have not done any hospital nursing except clinicals and I don't think I want to I am however still looking for that one perfect job you know something that is mon-fri no weekends or holidays yet has good pay. I do plan on getting my Bachelors but I have not decided if it will be in nursing or health sciences since i really would like to work in management but I don't want to do any more clinicals I didn't care for them much.

I started last May with 3 other new grads and we are all 4 still there and for the most part loving it. We are in ICU and had a great orientation and the fellow nurses have all been wonderful!

Specializes in ICU, telemetry, LTAC.

Eight new grads in my department and that's counting all of us from 3 different schools, not just the ones I graduated with. One is leaving in two weeks, one has an interview, one wants to go to a different department at some point. For right now, we're still here.

HI ALL END OF FIRST YEAR NURSES!!!:balloons:

I too graduated last May. When I started there were five new grads. We are all still there!!

We have had a great deal of support from our nursing staff. We also had lots of outside ICU classes and 3 months of floor training with a preceptor.

Funny thing is...there were two experienced nurses that quit at the end of six months. One was a home care nurse before and decided to go back. I think the other one was just not happy. Did they see some glitches in the system that us new nurses are too green to see???...:uhoh21: time will tell... but for now life in the MICU is all good.

LaVonne

i lasted about 9 months on the floor before i decided to try for what i really wanted to do. now i'm in public health and i love it!! i don't regret leaving the floor for one minute. i'm so much happier and more satisfied in my current position.

most of my friends who graduated with me left the floor also, most before the end of their orientation periods. they all hated the floor and have found other positions outside the hospital as well.
