specialty with lowest turnover rate?

Published

Has there been any research, or general consensus about a specialty or area of nursing that has a very low turnover rate due to ..ahem..job satisfaction?

just wondering..

I have heard the OR. They say once nurses start working there, they never want to leave.
Yup, this is true..surgery is wicked cool, we get our breaks and lunches, no dealing with pt visitors, and plenty of overtime to be had. What's not to love?

Trust me, I have my bad days like anyone, but I still have it pretty good.

What about public health nurses?

well,as a student nurse i always envy psychiatric nurses.they don't have much problem working with their patients. they just give orders and their patients respond without complain. i think they should be more satisfied than other specialties.

How much time have you actually spent in the psych unit? And how much time have you spent on an acute closed unit?

Yeah, I get the LTC numbers. I couldn't find a job in any of the hospitals when I passed my NCLEX in October, so I applied at a LTC facility. We have about 60% turn over rate so far this year. If I didn't have my long term goals in mind of getting into the hospital (which requires at least 1 year of experience), I would not have lasted a month myself. I have seen several new RNs last only a few weeks and call it quits because of all of the short staffing and the amount of work pilled on the nurses.

Has anyone found any recent statistics? I haven't been able to find anything substantial. It seems to me that pediatrics would have the lowest turnover rate, or possibly L&D. I'm just curious to know.

I've heard that L&D nurses stay put. I haven't seen a job posting for an L&D nurse since I began looking for nursing jobs!

I volunteered in the L&D department, and really loved it. Also, all of the nurses that I talked to absolutely loved their job. :)

Maternal Child nurses tend to stay. In my unit, a level 3 NICU, we have over 25% of our nurses with 20+ years of experience, and this is out of just over 100 nurses.
