I am a student in the BSN program and South University Tampa and love it! I am writing this because when I looked for information on the school before I went I could barely find any information. The school is very expensive however the teachers are great, and the program is very organized. The actual nursing program is 21 months long not including pre reqs. The selection process includes more than just GPA. I just wanted to put out some information for anyone interested.
Great idea Mini-B, I think your blog can help so many future students applying for the program that will have to go through this too at some point :) Thanks dncnontheclouds for your tips! it helps a lot. I had a chat with a student already in the program who had also advised me to not purchase the expensive apps yet since they are not really needed at this point. The only book I purchased new but at 1/2 price was for fundamentals and that is because I wanted to make sure I had the cd's in good cond, the rest are all used.
This is a great read about South University. My wife is a graduate of South with her BSN-RN degree from the Richmond campus cohort 3. She finished this past June 2013 and pass her Nclex's within 3 month of graduation. She currently working in ICU as a RN to the hospital she has been working at for the last 12 years as a CNA & Telemetry Monitor Tech. She worked full time 40to46 hours a week while going to South. So working and school and balancing home life, children, religious studies meetings and Bible teaching combined can be done, my wife is proof of this. Their is just 3 things needed to make this happen. 1. Great support and mentor. (I took this on) 2. Dedication (you must be self determined to succeed) 3. Forgo sleep. (I'm serious) my wife would go 24 to 48 hours without sleep a couple times a week and once going 58 hours straight. She did this by applying number 2. She also fit, healthily, a vegetarian and a runner approx 20 miles a week, with great support. Cohort program started with 28 students and at the end 7 quarters their was just 7 at graduation but only 2 of the 7 graduated, 5 had incompletes but was able to walk. Through all of that my wonderful wife made it and was one of the two. It helps that studying came easy to her and she was valedictorian in High School with a perfect grade point and in college she attained duel bachelors in anthropology and sociology to a prestigious women's University. With perfect attendance K-12 she also had perfect attendance to South University and was the only student at that school to achieve that to date at Richmond. I'm giving this information to encourage others going to South to know what they are taking on. Their is so much info I have collected being retired and being their for my wife as she was determined to be a BSN-RN Nurse. Update, Lisa is now signed up and starting South Nurse Practitioner program online. So if you have questions I would be honored to help.
Hello I just got accepted into their nursing program for April. I have been a little worried the whole time because I have read so many bad reviews on South University and this is helping a lot. I would like some information about how it turned out in the end for you. Did you graduate? Are you an RN now with a good job? Was it worth it taking classes at South University?

Good to know, thank you, you have been a ton of help…I was online buying books, some of them I was able to get used. What is your take on the app called Nursing Central ? Its a software product they are asking us to purchase. I don't know if you all had to get this or not?
This app has access to several resources like Daviss' Drug Guide and Taber's Comprehensive Handbook and a few other etc….. It costs about $150. Did all or any of the student in your class purchase this? Is it a necessary purchase? I would think other free apps would suffice… Let me know you take on this.
