Something that I'm so SICK of hearing...

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

is all about how HARD nursing school is. And Yes, I do understand that it is hard, BUT people are so negative! I told one women the other day that I was starting Nursing school soon and her response was "how daunting" What is that all about???

I have found people who have been so positive and think that it's wonderful but then there are so many people who are just so negative. I'm just sick of hearing it.

So for the universe to know.."I KNOW IT'S GOING TO BE HARD! I DON'T CARE! I STILL WANT TO BE A NURSE AND NO..I'M NOT GROSSED OUT BY BLOOD!"

Thank you..vent is over now ;)

Oh god yes I agree!! The way I view it is if there are currently nurses...they went through nursing school...meaning the programs ARE do-able! It reminds me back when I took my anatomy course, how everyone said how hard it was and this and this...I personally loved it and made an A! Don't let anyone get you down...anything is achieveable!

You know it's hard but don't want people to point out that it hard....ummm o.k. :)

I realize you're just venting but when people say that return with something positive like "I'm up for the challenge", "Bring it on! I can't wait!", "what? You don't think I have what it takes? I need you to be supportive". Or just let it go.

Most of the time it's really just their way of expressing admiration that you're taking on such a difficult road and you should be complimented. At least that would be my twisted thinking. LOL

Good luck.

You know, I got a good bit of negativity about going to nursing school also. Even from my parents and other family members. I'm married with 4 kids, and I guess they thought that I would never be able to juggle going to college full time and still be there for my kids and hubby. Well, I'm proud to say that I'm graduating in one more week with my BSN! I was told it was going to be so hard too. Granted, there were a couple classes that gave me quite a challenge (like the pathophysiology courses we had to take), but the majority of it really wasn't that bad to me. The patho was hard because of how my detail our instructor went into (thought I would end up with a PhD after that course....lol). The only other thing that I found to be difficult was doing the group projects. I'm all for working as a team and I know we have to do that in the workforce, however, working in a group for a project really isn't quite the same. This past semester I had a real hard time with one person not wanting to pull their weight with the project. Even got the instructor involved. Anyway....besides the little bumps here and there, it really isn't that bad as long as you put forth the effort to do the reading, studying, and work required. And learn to prioritize what needs done by importance. Then you'll be just fine.

let me tell my story about nursing school...when i went through, there was a guy in my town, my age, that was a big "zero" in my book, always bragging about his "new job" (jumped from job to job like, every couple of months) and how much money he was making. while i was in school, everytime i ran into him he always said to me either, "aren't you done with school yet", or, "most people fail out of nursing school, good luck", and with heaps of sarcasm in his voice. i just wanted to poke his eyes out! but, i was bound & determined to show him just what i was made of, he was the grease my wheels needed to keep me rolling on. after graduating, i landed a job with the state as a corrections nurse. i make great money, have all the hours i want to work, lots of paid time off, and best of all i will be retired when i'm 59 years old with a full monthly check coming in. what is he now? unemployed, a drunk, and eating crow everytime he sees me, he doesn't even say hello to me. what do i do? just look at him and give a big smile! so, you just tie a big knot and hang in there. you will get through school if you study your a@@ off and give the instructors what they ask of you. yes, you will have nights of little sleep, but remember, no one ever died from being tired. good luck to you, and all the nursing students out there that read this. when i went through school i did it with 2 daughters, a farm, and took care of an aunt with ms who lived with us. believe me...it can be done!

You have to block out negative people they will try to keep you down in life!! Nursing is such a loving profession and if you enjoy working with people than you'll be ok just stay focused in nursing school and you'll do fine!!

I am in my first semester right now and it is hard. Hey if you can vent I can whine!!!!!! It is gettting better though. I think a biggie is the time thing. We were putting in 10 hours of clinicals, 8 hours of pre labs, 3 hours of skills, 5 hours of foundations, 2 hours on Sunday to pick a patient, another 4 hours on Sunday for care plans, patho reports and paperwork, and some Fridays I have 4 hour of dosage. Thats 36 hours then add to that 10 hours of drive time and thats 46 hours. Then we have a community service element. This week I doing 6 hours tomorrow at the race for the cure, and I did an hour today for a planning meeting. This is all before studying, sleeping, eating, shoping for food, bathing, cleaning, laundry, kids, or anything you need to to live. I never feel like I finish studying, I never feel prepared, or that I have enough time. Some weeks we will have a major test, 2 quizzes, and 2 checkoffs that cannot be failed. Its very stressful because of the time thing. Sometimes you just have to disconnect to keep your sanity (what I am doing now), and spend some time just doing nothing, but its few and far between.

This is our 7th week, and I have seen stress at its worst. I have seen several strong people reduced to tears in front of the entire class. We have had two people just flat out faint in the middle of class (nurse said stress, lack of sleep, nutrition etc).

Its tough, but I am tougher at least today.

Hi to all,

I am in the process of applying to NS and I was remembering some off handed comment that my dad and my best friend made about nursing. For starters, my dad some what discourage me and to make it short, made it seem that nursing is somewhat less in "status" . Same with my friend; basically, I wished I had the balls to tell them that I wanted to become a nurse after I graduated from UCSD...now I feel like I'm playing catch up!! But as of now, I did get the balls (sure I waited this long )and finally decided "to hell with that", I REALLY DO WANT TO BECOME A NURSE!! Wheewww....glad I vented.

:twocents:

To coolpeach and all the mothers who are in nursing school,

You really should give yourselves more credit in handling all the madness and craziness of school!! Pat yourselves on the back(if not, I will) and let out a sigh of relief once in a while....MY KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU!!

Imtwin#1,

Thank you so much. I do want to point out though that it's not just hard for mom's. Because of the time situation (there only be 24 hours in each day), and school thinking there are at least 36 its gets difficult. They tell you the very first day that for the next X amount of months you must make nursing school a priority if you want to graduate. These two facts effect everyone ones life regardless of where they are. There are people I know who are young and single, but are about to lose their boyfriend because they cannot see him. Childless women whose marriages are on the rocks because they have no time for their husband. People who have to work in order to have money, but can't seem to do well at either work or school because it's just too much. Others who are taking care of elderly parents, and feel they just cannot get it all done. Women who are pregnant, and are trying to struggle between their health (and the baby's) and keeping up with nursing school. Even people with none of the above problems who are dealing with their extended families (parents, grandparents) etc saying why cant you come for the holiday, to visit, to the funeral etc.

Regardless of your situation you will find it seriously puts a strain on relationships, and any obligations outside of school.
