So I went to a meeting last week that most of my fellow newly admitted BSN students were at and I was the oldest in the room. I'm pretty sure they were all no older than 21 or so. I'm 31, I've got kids, and I've lived life. I'm worried I won't be able to connect well. In the meantime, I've been elected junior rep of the SNA, so I need to get over the intimidation quickly.
I know our local ADN program tends to have older students. I was expecting to see at least a couple of older faces, but nope. Anyone else experience the same?
I'm also thirty and starting my second semester 2+2 nursing program. I am one of the oldest but there are a few older than me. Honestly, I get along better with most of the younger students. I have had some bad experience with some of the older ones, especially one in particular that was just simply nasty to me; acting more like a high school brat than any of the others...
I have 5 or 6 close friends in school and all are 18-21. Guess I like being big sister
I'll be starting my 18-month BSN program this August, and I'm turning 30 in December. I thought I might be one of the older students in my class, but when I went to my interview there were quite a few people in their 30s and 40s. I'm not too worried about making friends or connecting with classmates, because all of my classmates at the JC where I did pre-reqs were between 19-23. Maybe I don't feel too concerned because I look young. =P
I think I will feel the same. Although I am 20 I have a one year old son. Most students at my college live in dorms typical college kids and I worry about "fitting in".
I struggled with this a lot. I was a teenage mom, so when I started college at 18, I wasn't exactly your typical "college kid." But, you know, I made a ton of friends, and still count a lot of them as friends almost a decade later. There were a few who never really got or respected the fact that I wasn't as "free" as they were, but for the most part, when you're studying and struggling and laughing, it doesn't matter how old you are or what responsibilities you have at home
I wonder if it's being a parent that makes me feel "older" rather than my age. I just consider all of these great fellow students and I know they've worked just as hard as I have, but our life circumstances give us little in common except that. I thank you all for your reassuring responses, though. I just need to walk in with head held high and remember I belong there, too :)
