Some Tips and Advice for a 2nd courser

Hi! I am 28 years old, goiing 29 next year(obviously), I am an engineering graduate and I plan to take up BSN as a second course, the reason I'm going for this is probably the same as yours...I'm planning to take up BSN in Silliman University(hopefully)...I have work now in Cebu...its good but I dont think it will take me where I want to go...

Do you have any tips and advices to give me...by the way I will start probably next year...I wnated it to be October but SU does not admit second coursers on the middle of the school year...

Some questions:

1. Do you have any idea how long it usually takes for a second courser to finsh BSN?

ok, i know theres a 2 year program in one of the schools in Bacolod, never heard of the one year program though...i think it only applies to grads who have a medical degree say doctors...and i am an engineering grad.

but I dont want to be the one to regret it if the future brings some unexpected turns...I'd rather endure 3 years of school and have a future full of positive certainties than go through a year of schooling and end up as one of the worried graduates...its like the saying(in military),"the more sweat in training the less blood in battle", " or the harder you train the easier the fight will be..."

i am assuming that there are successful 1-year course takers, but if you look at the training you're going to get,, its pretty obvious the the three year course is better...but thats just me...hehehe...IMO these 1 year long course is dangerous to the filipino nursing industry...

where did you take up your BSN? Is it in SU?

Hello everyone.. I'm also a second courser, I entered the curriculum last June 2005, being an allied medical course graduate, a pharmacist, I was able to qualify as an AHSE II student... I'm currently a BSN III student right now... Hoping to graduate in 2008... that's 3 years... hopefully...

i totally agree with you... i took up nursing for three years and one extra semester since my first degree is more on the arts...it saved me a great deal of trouble when i applied for the NLE... as you may know, second courses need to be interviewed by the BON before applying for the local board...In the interview, the only question the BON member asked me was how many years i took up nursing...i heard it wasnt that easy with other students...I think the BON are rather skeptical about second courses who finished the degree in less than two years...because of obvious reasons...

i can only think of two things to advice you... read up and "abuse" your clinical instructors during your community and hospital duties...just learn as much as you can... and im pretty sure you'd do well in the local and foreign exams... goodluck!:wink2:

we're on the same page here!!! Where do you work? and how old are you?

I know some schools in Cebu that offer good nursing ed for second coursers, for one there's Cebu Doctors University(formerly a College), I think they do accept second coursers(but let me check).

If I were you though I would just go to some city where there's not much distractions going on...and one would be dumaguete, it's not far from Cebu, you can go home once every month if you like, even every week if you can manage the time well(not to mention money matters on your travel), my point is if your gonna go to school as a second courser it better be good and planned well., and that the lesser the distraction the more you learn, Cebu is a metropolitan City, every move you make equates to money spent...but if you're in dgte, its better,food is cheaper,rent is cheaper and its not too polluted, better time mangement as theres not much traffic jams there compared to Cebu...

Thanks miQ for the advice...i dont want to feel how those students who went on a nursing "crash course"(so to speak) felt, its really hard for someone to accept the fact that they wont pass the board exams because of they took these tempting offers from some schools, its just s waste of time, money and effort!

Thanks for the inputs. I guess my username speaks for the industry Im in right now and Im actually somwhere in Mandaue. Im 25 by the way, how about you, where do you work?....I see that you are really quitting your job and be a full time nursing student. I like the tought but what Im actually inteseted in doing is work and study at the same time, if possible. I have an officemate who's already taking her 1st sem in Cebu Doc said that it's really hard and she's already thinking of quitting her job. And this is what I wanted to do, work and study as long as I still can and quit my job when it's really needed. I mean, having an income of your own is a whole lot better than asking from your parents. Esp. that Ive been working for years now. TSK TSK TSK. On the other hand, if ever there's no way that I can work and study at the same time, the city that Im eyeing where Im gonna study is Davao. Its a pretty nice place and Ive heared that the schools are good, esp. in their special programs for second coursers.
